Alex and I’s first piece from our country rap project was just published in the Oxford Handbook of Pop Music, a nearly 800-page tome single-handedly edited by @eweisbard. Our chapter has lots of material about outlaws, mud, and the politics of race, place, and music genre. This was really fun to think and write. It makes a nice home alongside chapters by @dandipiero, @pch9857, @phdmusicology, @stevewaksman, @keggergoldy, @annkpowers, and many more. Like any Oxford handbook, it comes with a hefty price tag, so hit me up if you want the pdf! taken in The Country by @blue_tha_fiff

It’s an honor to receive the first Charles Hiroshi Garrett Fellowship from @socammus with @blue_tha_fiff! Chuck was a model scholar and a generous senior colleague. It feels really special to hold this fellowship named after him and to carry out such meaningful work with it. by @blue_tha_fiff

Today 12-2pm PST, @blue_tha_fiff joins me on @dublab to play Detroit hiphop and talk about the Blue Devils, themes of death and revitalization in Detroit, Black sound studies, racism-canceling headphones, and more!
12-2pm PST www.dublab.com

Alex Blue V is a musical jack of all trades, enjoying his life as a performer, writer, arranger, producer, educator, adjudicator, researcher, and more. He is Assistant Professor of Black Studies in Media and Technology in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. His research examines the intersections of race, sound, space, and place, often employing heavily ethnographic methods to demonstrate the influence of race on sound, and the influence of sound on race. Blue is currently working on two book projects. The first, titled A Matter of Death and Life, is a “necrographic” study of the narratives of death and dying in contemporary Detroit hip-hop, and how artists employ various forms of death as praxis in music making. The second, which he is co-authoring with Dr. Kyle DeCoste (Tulane University), is an ethnographic study of country rap, also known as “hick hop,” that examines issues of race, gender, class, nationalism, and identity, primarily (but not entirely) in the southern United States. taken in dublab by @blue_tha_fiff

Spring conference season is upon us, time to take this academic show on the road. 🤓

1. Pop Conference in Los Angeles this week where my beloved research partner Dr. Kyle DeCoste ( @beardybrass ) and I will be discussing our ongoing country rap project in two different settings.

2. Society for Cinema and Media Studies in Chicago in April, where I'll talk about Black sound in/and Detroit.

3. Society for Cultural Anthropology Biennial in New York in May, where Kyle and I will give a workshop on collaborative research methods, centered around our country rap project.

Canada Post is booboo so I just got this today - after having to go all Sherlock Homie to figure out what facility they were even keeping it in. Then I got to pay a customs fee for them to release it to me! What a treat.

Anyway, it's nice to add this one to the collection. Working on a Matisse show was a lot of fun, and that drum corps was a joy to watch. I'm happy to have once again played a small part as euphonium herder.

On to the next one. 😈😈😈

Earlier this year, my friend Stacy reached out to ask for my address because she found something in an old box and wanted to send it to me. We went to high school together, so I assumed it was some artifact related to that.

This is what she sent. A framed photograph she took of me, ca. 2006...ish(?), while she was studying photography. It can be a bit unnerving at times to see old photographs of myself, but Stacy always managed to capture me in such a way that I felt/feel like myself. 🙂

So happy to receive this. Thank you, Stacy! by @blue_tha_fiff

Nah, this one deserves a grid post, not just a 24hr story.

Today, @brendalyndish and I continued our tradition of traveling 137 miles (each way) for THE sandwich: the beef tongue pastrami Reuben from Industrial Eats in Buellton. Our mutual favorite sandwich, the sandwich we dream about while having other sandwiches.

Made some stops for wine along the way, as one does. taken in Los Angeles, California by @blue_tha_fiff
