Caught two very different Nellie McKay shows in Tulsa, both sponsored by the Bob Dylan Center.

The first was an evening set at Lowdown, a cool jazz club, where Nellie accompanied herself on grand piano, mixing standards with the witty, wonderfully offbeat favorites from her debut album, Get Away from Me.

The second was a daytime family show at the Woody Guthrie Center, where she traded the piano for the ukulele and delivered a playful set of ’60s covers, including songs by Sopwith Camel, The Doors and The Cyrkle.

In 2024, I wrote and directed a show called Routes and got to make it with some of my favorite people at @thevibrand in Oklahoma City. Two of the episodes are nominated at the 53rd Daytime Emmys this year. The second episode focused on something near and dear to me— the music scene and history in Tulsa, OK (I grew up in Tulsa).

The first slide of this post is the intro sequence from that episode. I remember having a very clear vision for this sequence; I wanted it to carry that special energy that’s present at a show when the lights go down and the band is about to walk on stage. I knew it needed a custom song to feel right, but we didn’t have the budget to hire a composer. So, after a few days of fruitlessly searching for library tracks, I walked into my studio and made the music myself. I love scoring to picture, so it was a lot of fun. The second and third slides are iPhone videos of me making a bunch of guitar noise in order to craft the track, which I ended up naming “Opening Night”.

The experience of making the Tulsa Sound episode changed the way I think about music in my home state. I got to interview Woody Guthrie’s granddaughter (the story of how Woody met Bob Dylan is incredible)— viewed his original journals and the typewritten lyrics of his most famous songs. I got to hang with my teenage self’s heroes, Hanson. I got to spend a bunch of time in Leon Russell’s studio and archives. And so much more. I knew it was special when it was all going down, but time has only solidified that knowledge. I’m forever grateful for the experience.

Thanks to @bobdylancenter for having the Pop Up Playscape out to the Family Folk Fest this weekend. We love the chance to bring modular, loose parts play to new places and spaces! Because, as the old Scraps slogan goes, play builds community!

Alex Pianovich first heard Highway 61 Revisited in eighth grade. After the force of Like a Rolling Stone and Tombstone Blues, the third track stopped him in his tracks. “It’s got that cool little intro with the guitar and the piano. It’s such a break after Tombstone Blues. I remember the first time I heard it. It’s just a beautiful song.”

What he admires is its economy. “It’s just a handful of little stanzas, not much going on, but every line is perfect and it just goes with the feel of the song. I love the blues, and I love things that come pretty directly out of the blues. Of Dylan’s songs, that’s one where you can really feel his connection to it.” For the session, Pianovich reshaped the harmony around an arrangement he kept hearing in his head. “I changed the chords around a little bit. I had a way that I kept hearing it, and I figured out how to make that happen. I’m very happy with that arrangement.”
