So incredible to have been a small part of this stunning show. Thank you to everyone at @jesuschristsuperstar for welcoming us into this amazing room. To be able to capture every step of this show’s journey, from rehearsals to the sellout run at @thelondonpalladium, has been a dream. We are so excited to see the transfer to @thelaneldn, and look forward to the next stage of this wonderful journey ⭐️

@jesuschristsuperstar - When a Rock Concert Becomes the Story

I arrived at @thelondonpalladium with mixed expectations after finding Ivo van Hove’s 2024 Dutch production (performed in English) of Jesus Christ Superstar disappointing. Thankfully, this was a very different experience.

From the opening overture, the 19-piece orchestra makes an impact. But it is the concert concept that sets this production apart. The handheld microphones become more than props: they suggest control, power and the right to shape the narrative. The characters feel like pop artists, each bringing their own voice to the same story.

That idea runs throughout the staging. The priests become a sinister boy band. The whipping involves handfuls of golden glitter forcefully thrown at Jesus in time with each lash. It is theatrical, aggressive and fitting for a story about fame, power and the price of becoming a superstar.

The concert imagery remains consistent, and as a result, Superstar doesn't feel like the production jumps into the present day. It feels like the culmination of the concert world established.

The cast is excellent. @tyr1h brings frustration and vulnerability to Judas, making his betrayal feel understandable. @samhairwolfryder’s Jesus is tired, angry and human, with a raw and powerful Gethsemane as a highlight. @desmondacc’s voice made me appreciate Mary Magdalene’s numbers more than expected. @laytonwilliams is gloriously unhinged as Herod, while @youngthacko brings genuine despair to Pilate.

@tomscuttdesign’s Palladium set is striking. The diagonal cross doubles as a catwalk, immediately connecting the religious imagery with the concert aesthetic.

Not every choice works for me: the Romans’ white masks and oversized hands feel distracting, and Judas’s suicide is somewhat confusing. But these small reservations do little to diminish how thoroughly enjoyable the production is.

This Jesus Christ Superstar doesn’t simply put a rock concert around the biblical story. The concert becomes the language through which the story is told and that is what makes it work so well.

A production I’d happily return to.
