A Boise Moment: Peak Fall 🍂🌳🍁🍃

For a few weeks each fall, Boise puts on its best display. Golden vibrant leaves, a colorful tree canopy, and some of the most beautiful walks of the year.

This is the moment we’ve been waiting for. It doesn’t last forever, which makes it all the more special. Get out there and enjoy it.

🌟✨💫LIGHTS ON FOR OUR YOUTH!

Today we are celebrating Lights on Afterschool! Governor Brad Little has declared October 22nd Lights on Afterschool Day! This nationwide celebration shines a light on the importance of quality afterschool programs that keep young people safe, support working families, and provide opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.

ION and Jannus board members are outside Owyhee Park today, part of the Boise Parks and Rec where several programs are getting kids outdoors, engaged in-real-life play, and learning STEM concepts. Idaho has more than 500 out-of-school time programs that are providing incredible opportunities for kids!

Celebrate an afterschool program making a difference in your life by taking a photo posing as a lightbulb and posting it on social media with the hashtags #LightbulbChallenge and #LightsOnAfterschool.

Let’s celebrate Lights on Afterschool! ✨💫🌟

We found out the hard way at soccer practice last night that the city has begun winterizing park bathrooms. 🚽

This means that there are 80 of Boise‘s parks that no longer have drinking fountains or open restrooms. 😅

Luckily, many have portables set up, but the one we tried didn’t have any toilet paper left in it and we all know how awful it can be to help a toddler use them as it is. 🫠

Comment RESTROOMS and I’ll send you the link to the city’s website that shows which parks have year round restrooms and which are closed for the season so you’re prepared!

Our two penguin chicks, hatched on May 26 of this year, officially have names!

❤️ Rosalita (red band) is observant and curious. She likes to check everything out before making her move.
💙 Jetty (blue band) usually follows Rosalita’s lead... unless food is involved. Then he’s first in line!

Be sure to look for Rosalita and Jetty on your next visit to our Penguin Pavilion. Zoo Boise is a division of Boise Parks and Recreation. A young, female Magellanic penguin stands on a ledge in a zoo habitat.

Zoo Boise Wins International Award for Red Panda Passage

Zoo Boise’s Virginia R. Bartak Red Panda Passage received Top Honors in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) 2026 Exhibit Award competition, the zoo and aquarium profession’s highest recognition for exhibit design. The award was announced on September 30, 2026 during the AZA Honors and Awards Luncheon at the organization’s annual conference in Portland, Oregon.

AZA represents the global gold standard for modern zoos and aquariums, accrediting 255 leading facilities in 12 countries. Its annual Exhibit Award recognizes excellence and innovation in exhibit design at AZA-accredited institutions in the United States and around the world.

Zoo Boise, a division of @boiseparksandrecreation, was the only institution to receive Top Honors in its category. Under AZA’s award guidelines, only one Top Honors award may be presented in each category. Entries are evaluated by a panel of professionals from AZA-accredited institutions who serve on the organization’s Honors and Awards Committee. Zoo Boise competed in the category for institutions with annual operating budgets of less than $12 million and exhibit project budgets of less than $10 million.

“This award recognizes the best of the best in the global aquarium and zoo community,” said Dan Ashe, president and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “The work being done at Zoo Boise further strengthens the impact of our entire community and is something Boise can be proud of.”
