FINDING HOME is about so much more than growing up between cultures. It is about the privilege and the weight of carrying on the legacy of a people often forgotten. It is about holding onto to every ounce of our history despite these governments attempts to silence, erase, and disappear us. Finding home is about continuing the Griot tradition of storytelling to ensure that generations to come remember why we take off our shoes before we enter a home, why run away when we laugh, why we celebrate one’s life rather than mourn their death, and especially why we kiss our teeth. The idea of culture itself is something that was birthed from us - from the food, to the games, to the music, and especially to the art. And no matter how they may try to squeeze us dry of any sense of self, they can never truly rid of us. We do not die, we multiply - becoming one with the world around us. Home will always exist because we will always exist. With every light they turn off, every beach they sell, every tariff they raise, every neighborhood they try to gentrify, we will be there. Pushing forward, carrying the torch to light the way, and knowing that no matter where we are, we will always find home long as we remember who we are. PS - Love you, Dad. ⛺️Don’t forget to visit the Kitchen at Hartford Public Library from 12-4 pm for the Just Kin Arts Festival private lounge featuring tarot readings, zine making, dessert, and games. This is perfect place to relax and catch up with friends between activities. Please note that it’s also the only space at this venue with single-stall, all gender bathrooms. In the lounge, Afton of Monty’s Tarot Child @montystarotchild will be offering 30 minute tarot readings and a few paintings on paper ranging from $25-$150. 🪑 Afton is an artist and psychic growing their practice in their home state, Connecticut. Monty’s Tarot Child was created with the desire to provide people of all backgrounds with the opportunity to receive clear and resonant guidance from their Ancestors and spirit guides from a Black feminist perspective. Afton intends to offer you words of encouragement and to help guide you on your spiritual journey. Bok Choy Studios @bokchoy.studios will be hosting a craft table that allows for folks to learn about zines, and different ways to make zines. 🔖 “I will have handouts on how to make them, as well as their historical significance with respect to the Harlem Renaissance. Participants will be allowed to independently make zines that speak to topics they like, or they can submit their creations to be a part of a commemorative traditional zine that will be released after the Just Kin Arts Festival.” Bok Choy Studios is a illustration-based business in Hartford, CT that vends stickers, prints, zines, and independently publishes submission-based arts magazines. You can also enjoy free cookies and brownies from our friends at Futures Inc., the operators of the Kitchen at Hartford Public Library. Futures inc. is a non-profit that which provides on-the-job skills training and paid employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment. 🍪 We’ll also have card and tabletop games and puzzles available! 🎲 Please note that we are asking all participants in the festival to wear a high quality mask (KN95, N95) at all times indoors unless taking a sip or a bite.
