Located in Portland, Maine, Bold Magazine Shop @boldmagshop carries hundreds of specialty, independent, and international titles that cover the realms of art and design, literature, lifestyle and fashion, travel, and food.

Founder Stacy Mitchell is a dumpling fan herself. “Some of my favorite food memories are of eating pierogi my grandmother made. Now, they’re a holiday tradition, which makes them even more special,” she tells @abovethefolddumplings. “We’ve tried making her potato and cheese recipe ourselves a few times, but haven’t yet managed to get them just right. So every Christmas, my parents pick up dozens from a Polish church a couple hours from their house in Ohio. My son just turned three and I’m so excited to make sure pierogi are part of his Christmas memories too.”

Outside of the holidays, her go-to spot in Portland is Bold Magazine Shop’s neighbor, Sichuan Kitchen @sichuankitchenportland , where she occasionally grabs dumplings on the way home from a long day’s work. “An order of their Zhong Dumplings, Tian Shui Noodles, and Dry Fried Chicken is my happy place,” she says.

If you find yourself in Portland, make sure to swing by (and say hello to Issue 3 for us while you’re at it 😉).

Whether you are a novelist, newspaper reporter, freelance critic, essayist, or a writer for your local museum (or wish to be any of these things), join us for an intimate, nourishing gathering of New England writers on culture.

Everyone who attends is encouraged to join the participatory essay exchange. Here’s how it works: Please bring a printed copy of a cultural essay you love (old or new) by any writer. Everyone will drop theirs into a box on the way in and then pick up another to take home on the way out.

During the evening, expect readings from works-in-progress, reflections on enduring arts writing, social time and things to sip and nibble.

Participating writers will include: Jorge Arango, a critic for the Portland Press Herald; Melaine Ferdinand-King, cultural strategist, curator, writer and 2026 Rabkin Prize winner; Jori Finkel, a contributing writer for The New York Times and 2023 Rabkin Prize recipient; Nyamuon (Moon) Nguany Machar, a spoken word poet, teacher with the Telling Room and mental health advocate; and Devon Zimmerman, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. Facilitating the discussion is Jameson Johnson, founder and editor-in-chief, of the Boston Art Review.

Bold Magazine Shop will be on hand with a table of wonderful titles to peruse.

The event is a collaboration between Surf Point, the Dorothea and Leo Rabkin Foundation and Mechanics’ Hall. It was inspired in part by Jori’s presence in Maine for a residency at Surf Point, which is sponsored by the Rabkin Foundation.

🗓️ Event Details
When: Thursday, Oct. 8, 7p (Doors at 6:30p)
Where: Mechanics’ Hall, 519 Congress St., Portland, Maine

Writing is solitary work. One of the best things writers can do for one another is gather and share our work and ideas.

Please join us for an intimate, nourishing gathering of New England writers who write about culture in all its forms. Whether you are a novelist, newspaper reporter, freelance critic, essayist, or a writer for your local museum (or wish to be any of these things), you are warmly welcome.

Expect readings from works-in-progress and reflections on enduring arts writing. And all are encouraged to join the participatory essay exchange: bring a printout of an essay that has meant something to you and get to take one with you!

Please join Longfellow Books, the MWPA, and Mechanics’ Hall for a conversation for these times with longform nonfiction writers Justin Ellis and Virginia Eubanks. The conversation will be moderated by editor and radio and podcast producer Theo Balcomb.

In The Cruelty of Nice Folks, Ellis grapples with the personal and collective histories of white supremacy in his hometown after George Floyd’s murder and what those histories might mean for the rest of the country. Library Journal notes, “Ellis grapples with the quiet history of white supremacy in so-called nice Minneapolis in this highly recommended book for readers interested in social justice.”

In A Guide to Open Water Lifesaving, Eubanks also balances memoir and reporting, thinking through how to survive caring for a loved one amid our crumbling health care and social systems. Larissa MacFarquhar writes, "For anyone who's been told that trauma is a chance for growth, or that wounds are where the light comes in, Virginia Eubanks has written a scorching reply to the ‘exhausting bullshit’ foisted on caregivers. A furiously honest, beautiful, and riveting story about how she managed to stay sane, solvent, and loving."
