It’s Thursday once again, and we’re excited to bring you this week’s Throwback Thursday feature, shining a light on the iconic Tanzanian rap group L.W.P. Today, we’ll focus on their single “Jela” from their debut album, “Mke wa Mtu Sumu.”

L.W.P Majitu, which stands for Life With Purpose Majitu, is a groundbreaking Tanzanian Hip Hop collective from Temeke, Dar es Salaam. They are celebrated figures in the golden era of Bongo Flava and Swahili rap. Comprised primarily of two main members, Slota (or Sloter) and Ally G, the group rose to fame in the early 2000s thanks to their unique, fast-paced, and incredibly creative rap styles.

They have collaborated significantly with legendary producers such as P-Funk Majani (Bongo Records) and Master Jay. Some of their most well-known projects include their 2000 album “Mke wa Mtu Sumu,” which features the hit title track “Mke wa Mtu Sumu” (featuring Bizman) and, of course, “Jela” (featuring Inspector Haroun), our track of choice this Thursday.

Released in May 2000 and produced by P-Funk Majani, “Jela” is a classic Bongo Flava anthem that tackles social justice issues. The song delivers a powerful critique of police brutality, class inequality, and systemic corruption while showcasing the group’s signature humorous style. It highlights the plight of low-income youth in Dar es Salaam who often face arbitrary arrests and violence, while wealthier individuals manage to evade justice.

Another notable album, “Heshima Imetoweka,” came out in 2004 and features collaborative tracks like “Tatizo Foleni” (featuring Juma Nature) and “Bajeti” (featuring Chege). Other standout tracks from L.W.P include “Jitu Kali,” “Marashi Ya Pemba” (featuring Ben Pol), and “Dundo” (featuring Chid Beenz).

So enjoy this throwback to L.W.P’s “Jela” featuring Inspector Haroun, and make sure to visit www.ngomanagwa.com for more music and stories like this. Stay blessed!
