An upcycled piece. I bought this piece from eBay. I was attracted to the unusual fabric, but it was pretty much a flat hat. Made in the USA, it’s ivory straw with a sewn on multi coloured blue, teal and green straw braid. When I tried blocking it was much bigger than I had anticipated, so I popped it on a larger block to see what it did, it found its shape! You can never tell what a flat hat might look like until you start working on it. It’s had a very insignificant green bow to the rear that was stained and damaged, it needed more! It got more! An arrangement of silk abaca teal leaves totally lifted its amazingness, which I know isn’t a word😋. The Abaca had bleaching to part of the fabric which I used to my advantage to get a slight colour difference. It’s definitely a one of a kind piece, which most of my pieces are! Working at clearing my bench at the moment, but always get sidetracked! This Pillbox was a part of another possible project. I thought it was at a stage that it should be completed, so it jumped the queue. It’s an upcycled blush pink cello straw, with a trim of a spray of handmade blush pink silk abaca petals. I have made these petal in silk Dupion before, but making them from silk abaca gives a depth of shade and colour, and a completely different texture and appearance. I love texture but it is often difficult not to over do it with a trim. The construction and placement of this trim makes both shine. It’s available now, dm for details

Twins! I have had a few of this style of hat over the years in different colours, this particular Toque style must have been popular. No labels on either of them. Neutral coloured Cello straw with a crinoline braid trim. The cream has a bow to the rear, which probably need’s changing, and the beige a chiffon tie. The cream has a more dome shaped crown and the beige a flatter crown. Both can have trims updated or removed. Both are available now, dm for details

I have had this little piece in a bag, unfinished, being taken from one location to another to put together as it was a portable sewing project. Finally got it done! Had made the frame as a copy of on of my vintage frames, which I have worn many times and is so comfy, and requires no extra attachments to keep in on the head. The guipure lace is from a bridal store remnant sale. The lace consists of several stacked layers which gives it some depth and a 3D effect, lace often looks a bit flat. I definitely get a bridal vibe from it, but might also be suitable for a less formal event where you just want to pop something on your head. It’s available now, DM for details

Sometimes colour is hard to describe, so here goes. A pale turquoise Vintage Pillbox hat. Fabric crown and bow, cello braid sides. Another from the treasure box! It is wired to sit comfortably on the head without movement. I really admire the way wires are used in vintage hats to secure them to the head with no need for elastics or combs or pins. I try to use these methods when I can in my custom hats. The Hat is in perfect condition, and ready to wear. DM if you are interested, it is available now

I have had this Vintage hat hanging on my hat stand for a while now, so it wouldn’t get squashed any more. From another local Milliners stash, @cygnetandswann, she is sort of turban ish? Greeny blue crown with green and navy metallic netting covering, it with a show of green and blue at the front of the hat, which gives it a turban like appearance. In great condition, no label. It’s available now, dm for details 💙💚

I was attracted to the colour of this Vintage lovely, found by one of my hat hunters, @tina.coop . When it arrived however the fabric was not what I thought. It is a layer of blue tulle under a layer of pink rayon, which gives the illusion of a shot style silk or satin. Shot fabric is the kind of fabric that has one colour of thread on the warp and another colour on the weft, which changes the colour depending on the angle of the fabric. This illusion gives the ruffled beret/pillbox style almost a glow. A stem in pink has been added for a little definition amongst the ruffles. It is not a rigid hat, but the support is sufficiently provided by its stiffened tulle lining. It’s available now, dm for details

An upcycle/revamp. Loved the crown of this hat. Bottom right is a before pic. Hat some mark to the crown and sides. Managed to remove the crown marks, but just made the ones on the side worse 😬. So plan b. Luckily, and this is very unusual , the hat lining was the same fabric as the hat. Re covered the sides with the lining fabric, but just a bit short. Unpicked the bow and flattened it out to cover the short fall evidence and made a new trim. Put in a new lining. Still not sure if I am 100% happy with the look of the trim, but if you are interested in this pale blue vintage Pillbox hat, with a very unique crown detail, dm for details. Size is around 55cm

A lovely day yesterday at @balaklavaracingclub, for a Ladies Day Lunch. Great food and company, guest speakers Ali Clarke and Claire Lindop, two amazing ladies with inspiring stories. Spent the day with my sister @sam.piltz.7 and @melissabennettgregorace. All wearing Bonnetry hats of course! Sam wears a headband with a combo of vintage peach and lemon flowers, Mel wears Bonnetry Vintage, a peach chiffon “Prudence” hat, given to me by my amazing Milliner friend @oksanacaretti. This one is staying in my collection! I have a Bonnetry Original bandeau, leopard print chiffon fabric, from the op shop, and trimmed with hand made chiffon roses, made by me, from a dyed vintage hat that lost its oomf when it it was dyed and I dismantled it. I then recycled the fabric to make the roses. An array of upcycled and vintage always makes me happy 💛💗💕🍑

I love feathered hats, but sometimes I buy them, and then in hindsight, wonder how on earth I will resurrect them! This was one found by my hat hunter niece @mayajarviss in Melbourne. As she FaceTimed me I was attracted to the green feathers, but when it arrived the red and green combo screamed Christmas 🎄! It was a bit battered with not much definition or support. See before pic. So…… off with the red feathers and on with more green, a vibrant green which toned well with the original green. The inside of the hat was reinforced on the sides to give it definition and the tip, the crown of the hat, was blocked into a nice rounded shape. I think you will agree she is now a stunner! Lovely shades of green on well shaped Pillbox hat. It will be available in a couple of days when I finish my silk lining, dm me if you are interested 💚💚💚💚💚💚

Sometimes my week is not as productive as I would like. Life’s interruptions, which are always welcome💕I have a few custom orders on the bench, not quite complete, and then received this box of beauties, which have made my mind work overtime with the potential! And my studio looks like a hat explosion 😬
Here’s to getting back on track asap!😉
