ℝ𝔼𝕍𝕀𝔼𝕎: Dawnshard
✒️Brandon Sanderson | 🪧Fantasy
📚The Stormlight Archive ~3.5 | 📑247 pages
👧Adult |✨️GR: 4.43/5

📜𝐒𝐘𝐍𝐎𝐏𝐒𝐈𝐒: Rysn accepts a quest from Navani to sail to a hidden island and uncover its secrets before the wrath of its ancient guardians falls upon them.

🗣𝐁𝐔𝐙𝐙𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐒: Cosmere universe | Ship expedition | Bad-ass female | Godlike powers.

💫𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆: ★★★★☆

💭𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: I was nervous to pick this up. I was severely disappointed by Cytonic, and also aren't generally into "in-between-books". But Dawnshard is surprisingly engaging.

It has a gripping premise and great character work. The book’s told from two POV:s, and I felt unexpectedly connected to both. Rysn is fantastically nuanced and easy to like. Her character also contributes with insightful and thought-provoking representation of how it is to live with a disability. On the other hand, Lopen adds a wonderful comical relief that counterbalances the heavier content.

Most of the book consists of the characters traveling by sea, and despite me not generally liking long travel sections, it never got boring here. On the contrary: I really enjoyed the refreshingly new setting.

The only thing bothering me is the easily solved conflict. The payoff is a bit weak and everything’s unraveled too effortlessly in relation to the build-up.

All in all, I enjoyed Dawnshard. And definitely prefer it to Edgedancer. It has tension, intrigue, strong emotional connection to the character and feels well tied to the main series. Can’t wait to pick up Rhythm of War!

ℝ𝔼𝕍𝕀𝔼𝕎: Kingdom of Ash
✒️Sarah J. Maas | 🪧Fantasy
📚Throne of Glass ~7 | 📑980 pages
👧Young Adult |✨️GR: 4.69/5
––––––––––––––––⋆✵⋆––––––––––––––––
📜𝐒𝐘𝐍𝐎𝐏𝐒𝐈𝐒: Aelin must draw upon her fiery will as she endures torture.

🗣𝐁𝐔𝐙𝐙𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐒: Fae | Rising queen | Villian redemption.
––––––––––––––––⋆✵⋆––––––––––––––––
💫𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆: ★★☆☆☆

💭𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: I rarely DNF, mostly out of fear of missing out if the book actually gets better. But there are exceptions. This is one. It isn't bad, though, and I feel like I went into it under unfair conditions.

I’ve never been a huge fan of the this series. Or, I did actually really like Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows, but other than that, I’ve thought of it as generic. Which resulted in me procrastinating continuing with the series.

So, when picking up Kingdom of Ash, a lot of time had passed. And not only was my interest in the book itself less than luke-warm. I also noticed that I neither remembered the characters nor what had happened in the precursors. The dialogue and events went over my head and literally meant nothing to me, and I just didn’t care enough to reread the series or look up a summary.

And at page 108 (out of 980), I decided it just wasn’t worth it. I wasn’t enjoying myself and that’s the whole point in reading, right? So I DNF:ed it, with equally parts guilt and relief.

But since this definitely could have been a “me-problem”, not having picked up the books fast enough, I will consider trying Sarah J. Maas’ other books.

𝔹𝕆𝕆𝕂 ℍ𝔸𝕌𝕃!
It’s time for my fourth haul of 2024, and gosh, I’m SO excited to show you what I’ve got! 😍

It’s a beautiful blend of fantasy, manga, classics, sci-fi and non-fic.

“Flawed” is a thrift shop-find that I got for $1, while “Fighting for Family” and "Gudarnas bägare" (original title “The Chalice of the Gods”) are review copies.

This version of "Legends and Lattes" is from The Broken Binding, and has stunning sprayed edges. And I absolutely adore the Puffin clothbound edition of "Tales from Shakespeare".

My favorites in this loot are a 100 % cover purchases, though; the Puffin in Bloom editions of “Pride and Prejudice” and “Emma”! 🌸✨️

Busy? Stressed about your reading goal? Or just in the mood to binge a book in one sitting? Regardless of the reason, it can be very comforting to have some thinner, low-commitment books waiting on your shelf.

Here's a list 👆 with 20 of the best short books I’ve read, as well as 12 shorties on my own tbr.

All of these unputdownable books are under 250 pages and can easily be finished by tonight. From blisteringly contemporary to nail-biting science fiction.

𝐐: Do you like books featuring articifial intelligence? If so, what's your favorite? 🤔
––––––––––––––––⋆✵⋆––––––––––––––––
One of the most loved tropes in science fiction is AI-characters. 🙌

There's something fascinating and thought-provoking about a human-like entity with non-human restrictions and single-track thinking.

Here 👆 you have eight amazing science fiction books featuring artificially intelligent characters. While varying between being sassy, awkward and terrifying, they all make you contemplate about life and human behavior.

My personal favorite with this trope is A Closed and Common Orbit, because of its emotional punch. Which one's yours? 🧡

𝐐: What are you looking forward to most this Christmas? 🤔

𝐀: Honestly, everything! I love all things Christmas. The smells. The decorations. The gifts. Playing games with my family. Watching cute holiday movies. Kissing under the mistletoe. THE FOOD! It's such a wonderful and cheerful time and I could never pick just one thing. 🙈
––––––––––––––––⋆✵⋆––––––––––––––––
Merry Christmas, dear friends!

I hope your smile this holiday will be as big as my credit card bill. I know mine will. Because of you.

I am in such a debt to you.

You have supported me throughout the year and been the friends I truly needed to get through difficult times. You've made me laugh, made me feel seen, sent me gifts and, most importantly, made me believe in myself.

And for that, I thank you.

Christmas truly is a wonder. Not only because it makes all my savings disappear. But also because you notice who's there for you. And I want each and everyone of you to know that you mean the world to me. I wouldn't be where I am without your support.

So have a great Christmas. You deserve it. Fa la la la. Over and out. ⛄️🎄

[In Sweden, we celebrate Christmas on December 24, hence the somewhat early post for some of you]

𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆: ★★★☆☆

𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: The twentieth volume of The Walking Dead corresponds to the eighth season of the tv-series. And even though I prefer the adaption, I do enjoy the comics and recommend them if you’re a fan.

I liked, but didn’t love, this volume. It starts out a bit slow, and not a lot is going on during the first half of the book. It mostly feels like a long build-up before the next volume, which is somewhat dull to take part of.

But towards the end, the pace starts to pick up. More action is integrated, and if The Walking Dead is good at anything it’s action. Brutal shootings, vicious zombie attacks and lots of swearing: that’s the series at its best. And of course, the antagonist.

Negan is one of the best antagonists out there. He’s sometimes funny, sometimes heartless, but nonetheless always terrifying. His ruthlessness and foul mouth are both repulsive and engrossing, and it’s what you remember after you’ve finished the last page.

Overall, the twentieth volume is good. Because it’s somewhat protracted, I would have preferred it to be one with the following volume to increase the average pacing. But it still works as it is.
