hey it’s me

i never really intended to take a break from bookstagram but my mental health started getting worse, i was going through some hard times and maintaining a consistent social media presence felt really difficult and also very exhausting.

the last few months have been such a weird mix of everything. i’ve cried a hell of a lot, but i’ve also never laughed as much in my life as i have over the last few months. i’ve let go of people that didn’t make me feel good and focused more on nurturing the relationships that ground me.

in the process, i’ve learned a couple of things about myself:

i. i’m absolutely terrible at cracking eggs. like seriously i think there’s something wrong with me. why do i find it so difficult?

ii. my favourite thing about laughter isn’t the moment it’s happening, it’s the moment after, where you’re basking in that collective feeling of belonging, of sharing a moment with someone

iii. i need to work on not underestimating the love of the people around me. those who love me do so unconditionally. i found that when i fell, they caught me, without question or hesitation. and that kind of love makes you feel weightless

this brings me to my final realisation. there are some new things on the horizon, and i’m not sure i’m ready for all of them. but one thing i’ve learned is that i am stronger than i think. when things get difficult, i remind myself that i’m here, that i’m breathing, that i exist. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. but it’s enough for me in the moment. and i think that if i know that, especially when things get hard, then i think it’ll be okay. don’t you?

✨ what this week ✨

thank you dear @booksandameerah for tagging me in this fun little challenge! I have been reading and watching some really cool stuff lately and I’m so excited to talk about them, so this tag is perfect! 💞

📚 what I’m reading 📚
so over the past weekend I think I may have reached a record in the amount of books I was reading simultaneously; 9 (!) freaking books... don’t ask me why or how, it just happened. BUT out of those 9 books one definitely stood out, and that is After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid. my god, what a tearjerker of a book. it’s been a few days since I’ve finished it and I cannot stop thinking about it. keep an eye out for a review! thank you so much @onceuponanattorney for posting about this book, it deserves so much more love!

🎧 what I’m listening to 🎧
another book that really stood out from my currently reading pile, is the audiobook of The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. Tom Hanks is the narrator and now I need him to narrate my entire life. y’all know I love my historical fiction, and this was unlike any other I’ve read. again, review to come! in between audiobooks I’m listening to my favourite podcast @books__unbound 🤩

🎥 what I’m watching 🎥
I’m gonna need every single person who reads this to go to Netflix right now and binge watch Anne+ 🥵 it’s a new Dutch show about Anne, a millennial lesbian living in Amsterdam, figuring out love and life and it is FANTASTIC. even though I was born and raised in this city, I will never be bored seeing it on tv, so I think people not living here may enjoy it even more. all the struggles of growing up into adulthood and figuring life out by yourself was so relatable and the whole thing was funny, heartwarming and sometimes a little emotional. pleaseeee watch it if it’s available in your country!

🤩 what I’m looking forward to 🤩
I’m looking forward to watching The Bold Type (which has finally come to Netflix after me waiting for it for months!!), my first post-lockdown haircut (if you know me you know I despise long hair) and being able to shop again at Lush now that stores have opened up here 💞

I’ve tagged a few folks to join in in case they want to! ✨

📖 Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo - I’ve just started this series after seeing all the hype for these books, and in preparation for the Netflix adaptation coming out in April. So far I’m loooving it!✨

I’ve tagged some fab accounts to share their current reads if they want to!❣️

Tagged in the #insidebeautifulbooks challenge by @ems_shelflove and it was so much fun, made me appreciate some of my books even more✨

I found a lot of mine were just a plain colour, but On Beauty, American Dirt, Lily Allens memoir and Normal People pulled through here for me! Tagging some of you to find and appreciate those inside cover pages! 🙌🏼

In other news, tomorrow I start volunteering in my favourite Oxfam bookshop and I do not think my bookshelf is ready! Hoping I love it and can volunteer a lot of my time there whilst i’m still job searching (help).

Was tagged in the #lastnownext challenge by @whathannahreadnext, @athena.reads, and @book_inn 💕☺️💕⁣
⁣
By some insaaaane coincidence, especially because I never plan my reads and pick books on complete whims, the past 3 books I've chosen have shared pretty similar ideas/concepts that have linked them together rather nicely! ⁣
⁣
And okay - I'm kinda cheating because I've already finished Vanishing Half, and Homegoing is now technicallyyyy my current read...but whatever! These accidental similarities excite me and I wanna talk about it, thank you!! 💁🏽‍♀️⁣ (Have already reviewed Shame and Vanishing in previous posts for anyone interested!)
⁣
⬅️ Last read: Shame on Me, a book that discusses how our bodies are racialized, appraised, conferred identities, and treated differently based on said appraisal/identity. ⁣
⁣
⬆️ Current read: The Vanishing Half, a narrative about twin sisters, one who identifies as Black while the other passes as White, that shows how different appraisals of the body can result in excessively divergent lives. ⁣
⁣
➡️ Next read: Homegoing, an exploration of slavery that starts with two sisters in completely contrasting situations—one a slave, the other, the wife of a slave-trader—which then follows the lives of their children and subsequent generations, exploring the ripple effects of the sisters' divergent circumstances.⁣
⁣
How's that for an unintentionally-cohesive stack? 😜 I honestly think it's enhanced my reading experience: Identifying similar themes and revisiting the same ideas (mainly about the body and our control/lack of control over how it's treated) has allowed me to think deeper about these concepts and appreciate them more. 🥰⁣
⁣
Tagged as many people as I could, but as always, please join in if you wanna (and don't if you don't feel like it!)
