Are you the one? I picked you up, and put you on my shelf, but I’m not even sure. Your cover mislead me. The font, the illustration, the retro phone, I thought you were similar to others of your type, about crisis, being flawed, and running on existential angst.

I was floored and intrigued by the cover blurb that called you a miracle, so gave your back cover only a cursory glance

So, it’s my fault that I bought you and brought you into the house

I’ve been hanging out with you for weeks now, and haven’t got past page 45. It’s okay to take things slow, to savour, but I don’t know

This is a hurtful thing to say, something I can’t take back, that would end things before they truly began

I don’t know if you’re worth it

I’ve checked and you’re pretty thick clocking it at 273 pages. I say that only because you are consuming so much of my time, that could be spent on something more important

What if I have a stronger and more immediate connection with one of the other books?

But that’s not fair to you. I picked you. I invited you in. If it’s not too offensive to your artistic pretentions, I made a vow to finish what I started

Yes, you talk way too much about nothing, and show but never tell

Yes, I know, if you showed everything you’d take thousands and thousands, nay, an infinity of pages, but I don’t think you’re that deep

You speak of poverty, but is your author even poor, but does that even matter, and should it?

Write what you know, but we also need to invite, summon, create, translate, and channel, not merely think up, and be indulgent, be true to the character, kill your darlings, darling

It’s still only early days. You could be the wrong book, at the wrong time or the right book at the wrong time. But is there even a wrong time?

It’s me, Rolly, reader of banned books 💪

On Wednesday, my new heroes PEN America and Penguin Random House sued the Escambia County, Florida School District and School Board over banned books ⚖️

(Swipe ⬅️ for the first page of the Complaint, as well as a couple of Washington Post remarks).

Speaking of Escambia county (Pensacola is the county seat), three months ago they banned “And Tango Makes Three” by Justin Richardson, M.D. and Peter Parnell, illustrations by Henry Cole.

In this true story, a pair of male chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo were given an egg a penguin couple couldn’t care for. The two male penguins, Roy and Silo, made a nest and sat on the egg ‘til the baby, named Tango, hatched. Then “Roy and Silo taught Tango how to sing for them when she was hungry. They fed her food from their beaks. They snuggled her in their nest at night.” How precious is that! 🐧🐧🐧

Not only should this book NOT have been banned, it should’ve been PROMOTED for so many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that this is scientific fact! This event happened! And what a wonderful way for kids to learn that there are all kinds of families in this world, in Escambia county too ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤🤍🤎

❓What’s the last banned book you read❓

We’re home from the Literary Roadtrip 🏡
and these are the last of the Faulknerland pix, friends:

📚 Some new Faulkner purchases meet the existing ones. I’m so looking forward to reading “A Fable” and comparing it to his outline on the wall of his office.

📖 Soldiers’ Pay, his first novel.

📸 This and the next pic were taken by @rowanoakofficial staff. Everyone was so welcoming 🙏 We’d definitely come back to Oxford to visit Rowan Oak again, browse @squarebooks and have dinner @ajaxdiner 😋

😂 As seen at Ole Miss. Gave me “Animal House” vibes (there’s no toga emoji).

⚖️ At the hotel, Dave after two Zoom hearings, hence the half suit. Solo practitioners never really get a day off.

🐶🚘 Rolly: ready to go!

🚗 Thanks for coming along with us on this fun Literary Roadtrip❣️We’re already planning our next one.
