The MPBHBA staff and board of directors are heartbroken over the sudden passing of Rich Wojcikowski, longtime manager of Bookie's Chicago, who died in a car crash on Friday, September 4. Rich was known throughout Beverly and Morgan Park as the backbone of Bookie's. He was a tireless champion of local authors and a familiar, welcoming presence on Western Avenue. Our hearts go out to his family, and to the entire Bookie's team as they navigate this loss. We invite fellow small business owners and the whole community to stop by Bookie's, 10324 S. Western Ave., to sign a memory book that will be given to Rich's family, and to hold his loved ones close in the days ahead. The bookstore is operating with adjusted hours this week, noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. The book is available to sign through Sunday, Sept. 13.

My team and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Rich Wojcikowski, a cornerstone of Bookie’s Chicago.

During our Shopping in Solidarity visit to Beverly, Rich welcomed us to Bookie's, shared the bookstore's story and its connection to the community. He was a familiar face at the bookstore and played a major role in making it a place where people felt welcomed and connected through reading. Whether through Bookie's school book fair program to supporting local authors, hand-delivering books to customers or getting children excited about reading, Rich found ways to build community.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, the Bookie’s Chicago team and the Beverly community.

During our #ShoppinginSolidarity walk in Beverly, we met with Amy Pilafas, co-owner of @haven_1890, where we learned more about the woman-owned gift and lifestyle boutique who now provide over 20 jobs to residents in the community. Our next stop was @@bookieschicago, Manager Richard Wojcikowski shared how the bookstore brings the community together through book fairs to support their local schools. We also met Andy Robinson, owner of @andysunflowercafe, who was hosting a pop-up inside Bookie’s and shared her story with us and how our City can come together to support small businesses during these challenging times.

We were reminded during our walk why shopping local matters now more than ever. Thank you to the Beverly business owners for welcoming us and sharing your stories!

Planned by the City Clerk’s Office and the 19th Ward Alderman’s Office, we heard from 5 local business owners within walking distance while we shopped, enjoyed coffee, and had lunch.

Shopping in Solidarity took us to Beverly this week! 🛍️ We visited @haven_1890, @bookieschicago, @andysunflowercafe, @runningexcels and @horsethiefhollow to learn more about their business and show our support.
When we shop local, we’re not only supporting small businesses, but also the families and neighborhoods they call home.
Thank you to the business owners and everyone who joined us! ❤️ A person in a pink shirt and a person in a yellow shirt are in a bookstore. One is holding a microphone and the other is pointing. Shelves are filled with colorful books, and there's a display of red lanterns by the window.
