Dear all,

You are sincerely invited to come by and see the exhibition of “Déjà Vu”.

For the first time the archive “Déjà Vu” will be presented for public viewing. The soft exhibition is spread out across three beautiful spaces in Amsterdam: BOOKS At, San Serriffe and Chillzone Books.

Starting this Thursday, June 11, 2026 until end of June:

@books__at : 13th – 27th of June*
@san.serriffe : 11th – 28th of June*
@chillzone.books : 12th – 19th of June*

*On view during opening hours of each spaces.

Slide 3, A text excerpt written by the great @manon_fraser_ 🤍

The archive assembles thousands of extracted images from found books and objects, libraries (amongst @sitterwerk , @rijksakademielibrary ), archives, and personal collections.

A heartfelt thank you to @batia9700 for her support and generosity on allowing me to work with her archive.

Disclaimer: All images in “Déjà Vu” are appropriated, found, borrowed. To gather is to remember; to frame is to hold a moment before it vanishes.

This project is realised with the support of Stimuleringsfonds Creative Industrie @stimuleringsfonds

We’re launching a series dedicated to typography-related shopping around the world — a selection of bookshops, studios, and small galleries where a designer might find something for themselves. For each city, we asked a type or graphic designer who lives there and whose taste we trust to share their recommendations.

Today’s guide is by Edgar Walthert, co-founder of the typographic Mastodon instance and organizer of Letterspace Amsterdam, and it’s about Amsterdam!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝟬𝟴: 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺

The eighth edition of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘵, made by Matt Hinkley, features the work of American artist Barbara Bloom. To celebrate this edition, the display in de Appel Archive will feature a selection of ephemeral objects produced by Barbara Bloom, a former Amsterdam resident and long-time collaborator of de Appel, that are housed in the archive. Bloom’s enigmatic output of printed matter, which mysteriously traverses poetry, fiction, photography, design and advertising, was the subject of Matt Hinkley’s research into the de Appel Archive and is subsequently presented in print in the form of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘵 08.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘵 is a recurring publication from the archive of de Appel that can also be accessed while the reader is physically distant, or the archive is far away. The distance, and at the same time the fickle proximity of digital platforms, is now translated into the tangibility of archival messages.

You can visit the archival presentation during de Appel’s regular opening hours between Wednesdays and Sundays.

Books take center of my room, always.

Reading, browsing, thinking about my TABF @tokyoartbookfair book haul on tatami all day and night.
What books stand out in Tokyo.
Which books are genius works.
What books we don’t have in London…

In my most splendid dreams I lived inside book archives. 💖📖📒📙📓🔖📇📑🛩️ ❄️

Matt Hinkley, artist and owner of bookstore BOOKS@ in Amsterdam, has been working in the archive of de Appel since 2021. His archive work is as meticulously precise – with so much love for the book, the paper, the design, the concept and the meaning – as he runs his bookshop. He became mesmerized with the work by Barbara Bloom that looms everywhere in the archive from 1974 until now. The work is not always present in an obvious way, but appears again and again in image, word, design and afterimage, making relationships throughout the archive. These reminiscences of Bloom’s significance to de Appel have a way of slowly surfacing, appearing in places you least expect, steadily gaining meaning and becoming placeable, interconnectable and understandable.

A silver navigation, a gift that leaves no trace, an eleven o’clock clock, a patio on a tree stump. A realm or hint of chances, a journey or trajectory of continuation. A shrine, and a boundary of waiting.

[ENG] Our latest bulletin is ready and waiting for you at the opening of ‘The Drain’ today, running from 5–8PM. In it, and accompanying the exhibition, is an interview with Dutch activist, writer and former sex worker Annie Verdoold, who became known in the 1980s and 90s for her actions and community-organising in the district of Spangen, where she fought against the so-called drug tourism plaguing the area—and for the people who are neglected by the system, the ‘most vulnerable’, as calls them.
