Pride & Prejudice
By Jane Austen
Pages - 400
Year - 1813
Genre - Literary Fiction, Romance

At first glance, this looks like a simple love story set in old England. But it is so much more than that. Elizabeth and Darcy, two different personalities are not separated by fate but by perception they have for one another.

Pride can be defined as self-protection or self-importance and prejudice is quick judgment based on the initial impressions and previous rumours about something or someone.

So, both characters misread each other because their minds are already decided. It seems they saw what they expected to see.

The novel explores how first impressions shape behaviour, how social pressure influences attraction and how emotional maturity begins with self-awareness. Darcy had to confront his superiority and Elizabeth, her bias.

Love here is not a sudden passion. But it grows as the characters grow in their understanding of themselves.

I loved the detailed descriptions. It's not just about tea, tension and unspoken feelings. The depth of her prose is outstanding.

Both pride and prejudice are not historical problems. They still exist within us. They are as true as day and night. That is why this novel still feels so relevant.

Highly recommended.

Have you read this one. I'd love to discuss with you.

Of Love and Other Demons
- by Gabriel Garciฬa Maฬrquez
Year - 1994
Pages - 160
Genre - Magical Realism, fiction, romantic tragedy, classic

Set in the 18th century world where superstition, religion and power decide how people should live and love.

So the story begins with a young girl believed to be possessed after a rabid dog bite and she is locked away in a convent for โ€œtreatmentโ€.

What follows is not just a story of illness, but of misunderstanding, control and a forbidden emotional connection that slowly grows in silence.

This book feels like a quiet and unsettling love story shaped by fear, belief and society.
But the book is not really about romance. It is about obsession, faith, authority and how easily love is labelled as something dangerous.

The writing is calm and poetic, yet deeply disturbing underneath. The story also felt like a gothic fiction because of convents, exorcisms, decay, confinement and moral darkness.

It shows how society punishes what it does not understand. And how the same act can bring different consequences for different classes of people.

This is not a comforting book. But it felt honest.
And yes it echoes with you long after you stop turning pages.

Highly recommended.
