A month in San Diego is what I needed. It’s been a heavy year. Been working hard. Thankful for the ones who held and hold me down. Thank u for the love SD. 🖤

A real full-circle moment coming back to San Diego and playing Booty Bassment.

I was going through so much when I lived here. The pandemic. Lockdowns. Getting engaged. Finding out I was having a child across the country. Going back to school. Trying to start a business. DJing whenever I could. Helping kids navigate school through a computer and dealing with the daily login issues. Eight chickens, one snake, one dog… it was a lot.

But I always knew I could forget about all of it at the Booty Bassment Dance Party. Sometimes I’d be honored with an invitation to play. Other times, I’d be in the back corner kicking it with the homies.

This party, this place, and these guys really held me down when I needed it. Coming back to play means more to me than I can properly explain.

Forever grateful. Long live Booty Bassment Dance Party.

You can tell a lot about someone by how close they stand next to you. There’s this last inch most people leave between themselves and the rest of the world. It takes a certain kind of confidence to step into it without making the moment flinch.

He was good at that.

We’d danced together once before. He wasn’t a particularly good dancer and seemed perfectly aware of it, which somehow made him more attractive. He’d watched me dance for a minute, and when I came back to the group he just said, “I’ll dance with you.”

That first time was cute. We laughed through questionable dips and leaned in too close under the excuse of trying to hear each other.

That weekend he took me dancing, this time to @bootybassment .The place felt like the high school party everyone remembers having but probably didn’t. Moody, deep base, everyone singing, bodies and shoulders moving wherever there was room. I grabbed his hand and weaved through the crowd to the dance floor.

He has great hands. Calloused. Certain. In control.

There wasn’t much talking on the dance floor. I could feel his breath on my neck. His hands where bone meets flesh on my hips, then up to my waist. He turned me around. A hand at the small of my back. Our faces got closer until there wasn’t really anywhere else for my lips to go.

That kiss changed the temperature. After that, I forgot there was a room.

This continued to the car. Before he opened my door, he picked me up. My legs went around him, my back against the car and hands between his neck and sharp jawline. Eventually I slid back down, my arms still draped over shoulders that could devastate me. My toes had just found the pavement when I felt his hand at my neck.

Spoiler: we didn’t sleep with each other. That’s part of what made it so good.

Intimacy isn’t just that. Sometimes the whole thing happens in that last inch everyone else leaves alone. The one he crossed elegantly the first time he stood next to me. It’s in all the small delicious things before the finish line, face to face on the dance floor, that split second before a kiss when you both know exactly what’s about to happen and neither of you rushes it. #thingstodoinsandiego #sandiegobar

If there was ever a moment to say “IYKYK”, this here is the one.

For one night only, BOOTY BASSMENT makes its Portland return for Labor Day weekend.
The hip-hop juggernaut was a Portland institution for years (and still runs twice-monthly in Dimitri’s hometown of San Diego).

For many, BOOTY BASSMENT is synonymous with their most cherished years getting down and dirty on the Holocene dance floor.

So we’re bringing her back, and with the glorious matinee timing of 5pm-9:30pm, because we know y’all still want to be in bed by 11 (and yes, we do too).

Tickets at holocene.org
