Mark your calendar!!! Next Sunday we’re co-hosting a book launch with our friends @speakeasybooks here at the shop, and it’s a good one.

Kat Anderson — author of the bestselling “Tending the Wild” — will be joining us for a reading from her new book “I Sing to the Earth”, followed by a Q&A and book signing.

If you care about land, stewardship, restoration, and our deep relationship with place… this evening is for you. Her work has shaped so much of the conversation around tending land with reciprocity and respect, so hosting her here in our mountain corner feels pretty special.

We’ll have wine, snacks, good company, and plenty of time to linger.

Come listen. Ask questions. Get your copy signed. Stay awhile. 🌿 4pm on Sunday, March 8th @elserenomercantile

As the year turns, we’re looking back at El Sereno with full hearts.

This year brought wins worth celebrating and lessons we didn’t take lightly. We lost animals and welcomed new ones. The land stayed wild and honest, offering beauty, connection, and constant reminders that nothing here is passive.

We learned—sometimes the hard way—about land stewardship, animal husbandry, business, and parenting. All of it intertwined. None of it possible alone.

We’re deeply grateful for our family, our community, and everyone who shows up—by lending a hand, asking questions, offering support, or cheering us on from afar. This place exists because of connection: to the land, to nature, and to each other.

Here’s to another year of learning, growing, getting it wrong, trying again, and finding beauty in process. 🌿

Spent most of the day building fences with friends for our friends Juliana and Markus . They are doing something special with land that was once ruined by fire , rebuilding , nourishing , growing …. It’s inspiring to witness and we are thrilled to help out whenever we can. A perfect day in the outdoors without a k pop demon hunter in sight ;)

NEWS FROM THE LAND - Winter projects
This barn is the first permanent structure at the ranch, and it has been a labor of love. Initially it was intended for the goats, but once we raised the structure the space felt so nice, we changed our mind and decided to turn it into a workshop… so now we have yet another project on our hands, as the goats still need a home.

At the same time, we’ve been hard at work creating paddocks to receive the goats (so much brush to clear!) and that’s when the main work of regenerating the soil starts. Animals have an incredibly positive impact on the land they graze, helping to fertilize, bury seeds, stimulate the root systems and create biodiversity - all of that while capturing carbon into the soil.

We’re excited for this new chapter and to be working during the colder months!

Success for me will be a quiet walk at sunset with peace of mind and a clear conscience . I’ll trade a good horse for any Ferrari . I’ll take a home cooked meal with food from a Farmer I know over any restaurant . When all the hard days worked will earn me the comfort of not having to stress about how to pay the next bill . When I can go to bed knowing that my family is taken care of . That’ll be success for me .

Fall has arrived on the mountain 🍂 The air is crisp, the light is golden, and everything seems to slow down just a bit. Out here, the changing season calls us back to purpose, reminding us why we chose a life rooted in nature, in work that matters, and in the beauty of simple things. Here’s to fall—may it be full of color, reflection, and good ground to grow from.

Water and soil health go hand in hand, and they’re always top of mind in everything we do at the ranch. Our friend and mycelium scientist Ryan @soulfungi introduced us to the incredible ways mushrooms can help us on the quest for healthier soil—while saving water in the process.

Ryan has been experimenting with King Stropharia—a beautiful, burgundy-capped mushroom that improves soil health and develops a symbiotic relationship with trees, boosting yields and reducing water needs.

Following his advice, we started using King Stropharia as mulch around the fruit trees in our orchard, and also began a “mother patch” beneath an elderberry canopy to grow more mycelium we could eventually spread across the property.

Then came an incredibly hot summer, followed by an unusually dry winter—and we thought the mycelium was all gone.

But just last week, Ryan came by for a visit, and to our happy surprise—it’s all still alive, just sleeping! That was so encouraging to hear :) We immediately brought some fresh food to the patch and started watering again.

And you can really see the difference—everywhere the mycelium had taken hold, the soil was rich, dark, and smelled unbelievably fresh.

Nature’s resilience is truly something to behold.

We’ve been using these terracotta ollas in our orchard, and the results are kind of magic - our fruit trees are so happy, and we have dramatically reduced our water consumption! Now you can get your hands on them at the shop.

Handmade in France from high-fired clay, these slow-release water vessels keep your plants happy and your slashes your water bill. Just bury them near your veggies or trees, fill with water, and walk away—your plants will sip what they need, when they need it.

💧 Saves water (up to 3x less needed)

🌱 Waters for 3–15 days depending on size and soil

🥕 Great for garden beds, fruit trees or whatever you’re growing

🌍 And yes, zero-electricity, no plastics, and totally passive
