Mechanics matter! Even before clearance for running or jumping.
After 4 weeks in a cast, 4 weeks non weight bearing in a boot and now in his 4 weeks of weight bearing without high impact, we are preparing for returning to the field.
Field based progressions allow us to assess movement quality, coordination and control while building towards the demands of running and impact.
I keep an eye out for deficits and differences between sides while preparing for the next phase of rehab. The goal is to make intentional progressions towards higher impact tasks.

🧠 SYMPTOM-FREE DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN GAME-READY!

Just because concussion symptoms have resolved doesn’t necessarily mean an athlete is fully prepared to return to sport!

📚 Research involving 86,879 athletes across 19 studies found that athletes with a history of concussion had 1.93 times the odds of sustaining a subsequent injury.

This is why concussion rehabilitation needs to go beyond symptom resolution!

At Boston Concussion Clinic, we incorporate dual-task training, reactive agility, sport-specific movements, and exertional progression to prepare athletes for the physical and cognitive demands of competition.

Ahh what a fantastic opportunity to be able to attend the 8th Annual Gymnastics Medicine Symposium hosted by @gymnastics.medicine and @elspethhart 💞🤸🏻

On day 1 (photos coming soon) I was asked to give a lecture on ACL recovery for gymnasts, and day 2 was a very fun, hands-on practical day in a gym! When I was in college club, I actually competed in a meet at this gym.. so cool. The coolest aspect of this conference is that it is multi-disciplinary; getting to learn from your colleagues about nutrition, emergency response, and of course exercises from other PTs around the US was very unique. What a great day!

Stretching can be helpful, sure. I’ll add body care and stretching into someone’s PT program when necessary. But sometimes stretching seems to be the most often named “solution” when you’re having pain. Sometimes the bigger piece that is missing is strength, load management or movement control.
That’s why, as physical therapists, we are taught to look above and below a location of pain and look at the person as a whole to find the missing pieces!

Columbia is getting back an OG🐐

Getting the privilege to work with Grace in both high school and now college, there was always one goal: get back to the field. She showed up everyday with determination, grit and the best attitude. Proud is an understatement. Excited to watch you crush it G💪🏻💯

the patella tendon graft is the strongest, that’s why it’s the most common graft used for ACL reconstruction. However, with that, comes another injury. Taking from your patella tendon, usually causes WICKED tendinitis in the front of the knee.
Why is this a big deal? Because it effects strength testing scores, comfortably, and impact focused exercises. During my first recovery journey, my patella tendinitis set me back about 2 months. It’s no joke.

Can physical therapy be helpful before surgery? - Absolutely!
Pre op physical therapy for most conditions, in this case a hip labrum, can help prepare for surgery by improving available range of motion, build strength, and improve movement and loading of the hip. In some cases we can even prepare for post op management of symptoms and strategies to make the recovery process as smooth as possible.
Preparing for surgery also prepares you for after! Better strength and motion before = better strength and motion after.
