Material paces innovation /part 2
Slow craft and material design research leads to innovation

Presenting the DAE Graduation Show 2025 Narratives #4 by @nadineb0tha with co-leader of Studio Thinking Hands, Kiki van Eijk @kikiandjoost.

“If you work too quick, you won’t reach something surprising,” says Kiki van Eijk, co-leader of Studio Thinking Hands. For the studio, craft is not nostalgia but a vital way of knowing—a method for tuning into intuition where the material sets the rhythm. By choosing hand-led tempos over digital defaults of efficiency, these projects restore the value of play and unpressured time. This deliberate pace isn’t a delay; it is the essential precondition for reaching deeper relevance and unexpected innovation.

Victoire Donneger’s (@vcrdng) ‘Dear Mother, Dear Daughter’ offers a silent, epistolary ritual for intergenerational reconciliation, translating private letters between mothers and daughters into large-scale hand-quilted flags. Guillermo Cárdenas’s (@cdecardenas) ‘The Quicklime Paradox’ transforms a material once used for both domestic care and state violence into a medium for queer remembrance and Andalusian material storytelling.

Mijali Posada’s (@mijaliposada) ‘The Craft of Being Too Queer and Hybrid’ reorients traditional Mexican, Cypriot, and Asturian crafts through a queering methodology to create communal tools for belonging and subversion. Christophe Boulmer’s (@christophe.boulmer) ‘You Rest, You Rust’ reframes the Norwegian cabin fireplace as a site of ritual and decay, using sandpaper veneers and MIDI-triggered sound to explore the erosion of folk traditions.

Thibaud Kanty Boto’s (@boto_thibaud) ‘Feo Maneno’ uses a mechanical sound installation to stage a dialogue between traditional Malagasy rhythms and the hammering of silver, reflecting on the preservation of cultural memory against the erasure of tourism.

$Exit Night, Enter Light is a digital zine created collaboratively by the first-year master students in Contextual Design at Design Academy Eindhoven @designacademyeindhoven. Over a period of three months, they conceptualized, designed and produced this document under the theme of nightmares/daydreams— the dream in all forms. It’s an upside-down project, latching on to the functionalities of The Couch but operating in a dream facade where up is down, left is right and front is back. Let your subconscious decide what you need: the absurd, surreal aesthetic of a fleshy toilet spinning in the dark or a chair melting like silicon. Or you alight upon the Korean snake dream (which pregnant people experience before giving birth) or the unknowable Malagasy monsters or the sound of snowy forest in Oslo. Or you gain access to a trip to a masc barbershop that you’d never go to; catch a snippet of Harry Belafonte singing about bananas; don armor you’re not allowed to wear. There’s more - much more.
