Yesterday was a descent into a special kind of hell. I loved it. It started at KM 13, 2,000 meters up in the dead of night, when I took a fall and broke my wrist (X-ray confirmed). An hour later, I was soaking wet and shivering after falling into the lake, then trapped in a massive bottleneck climbing toward the rim. Every time I used my poles to climb, I had to drive my weight through a broken wrist. It was pure agony.

I pushed a massive pace to the summit at 3,732m, but the combination of the injury, the heat, and zero sleep made me crash. I sat down and accidentally fell asleep in the baking sun.

When I woke up, I was in a dark place. My legs had turned cold from the 45min sleep, and the descent became a slow-motion nightmare. Blisters, blue toenails, and the ghost of old knee injuries all came screaming back at once.

It had taken me 14 hours just to cover 27km and 4,000 m ascend. I felt defeated. I felt ashamed. I felt like I had already given up.

But then, I found that piece of myself that I love. The part that says: “I don’t mind losing, but not giving my all is unacceptable”.

I decided to own the pain. Every throb in my hand and every sting in my feet became a reminder that I was still alive and still in the fight.

From KM 27 I stopped surviving and started charging. I entered a total flow state; six hours of constant, absolute full send. I hunted down and passed a sea of people who had overtaken me hours before. I gave Rinjani100 every single thing I had left in my soul.

At the 19h 40m mark, I hit the checkpoint at KM50. They told me I had 20 minutes to cover the next 5-6km to make the cutoff for the 100K. That’s a sprint for a PB. With 5,000m of elevation in my legs, up a hill with a used body: impossible.

I didn’t stop. I charged up that next climb anyway. I wanted to make the mountain earn my DNF.

When the 20hour mark hit, it was official. I was out. Not because I quit, and not because the mountain broke my spirit, but simply because I didn’t perform well enough in the early hours. I can live with that.

I’m leaving with a broken wrist, destroyed legs, and zero medals; but I’m leaving with my head held high. I didn’t give up. Never give up.

As this year closes, it feels like the right moment to reflect on yours.
