Happy anniversary, Concrete Coral!

A year ago, we deployed Leandro Erlich’s imagined traffic jam: 22 marine-grade concrete cars that would become a hybrid reef, studded with corals native to Miami.

What began as a sculpture has quickly become an underwater neighborhood. Fish weave between the cars, marine life is thriving, and scientists return each season to survey and document its beautiful evolution. Art, science, and the ocean are co-creating.

Thank you to every swimmer, diver, scientist, partner, and storyteller who brought REEFLINE to life and made this first year possible.

Swipe through the year.

The world’s largest heart returns to the ocean.

This Miami Art Week, REEFLINE will unveil its second phase: Heart of Okeanos, a monumental 26.1-ton underwater sculpture by British artist @petrocsesti, inspired by the heart of a blue whale.

The work draws on the extraordinary story of a whale that washed ashore in Newfoundland in 2014. Its heart was recovered and preserved by scientists at the Royal Ontario Museum, becoming the inspiration for Sesti’s vision of one day returning it to the ocean.

Conceived as both an artwork and a hybrid reef, the sculpture will find its underwater home off 4th–5th Streets in Miami Beach, where marine life will gradually transform it into a living ecosystem.

HEART OF OKEANOS: FIELD NOTES
· 26.1 tons of sculpture
· 17 ft long x 9.5 ft wide x 7.6 ft high
· 20 ft beneath the surface
· 25°46.38277′ N · 80°07.44907′ W

Expected deployment: December 2026, weather permitting.

More details coming soon.

Please ♥️VOTE for our project!

We are excited to be finalists with our sculpture proposal for Miami’s The Underline Plinth art project : A FOREST FOR MANY, by @carlosbetancourtartist and @albertolatorrearchitecture .

The public VOTE is now open, link to ♥️VOTE in Bio. We would be grateful for your support in bringing this project to life! The theme celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States. View all the finalists and cast your vote at the end.

A FOREST FOR MANY:

Inspired by the organic rhythm and symbolism of a bamboo forest, A Forest for Many is a site-specific sculpture reflecting on resilience, individuality, collective unity, and the evolving idea of America after 250 years. Composed of 50 golden-coated aluminum poles evocative of bamboo, rising from a shared foundation, the work symbolizes the 50 United States as distinct yet interconnected presences—each reaching skyward in its own way, yet together creating a forest of infinite voices and shared dreams.

🐚♥️An artwork from March 2000… The Sound Symbols Project. Some of you may remember this site-specific work, made possible by many wonderful people and volunteers. Years later, this work helped inspire #MiamiReefStar for the Reefline. Magical Continuity. #NeisenKasdin @mburger305

Calming the visual Noise—-

Neon-Reef: Visual Restoration is an immersive environmental cinema. Filmed underwater along South Beach’s
nearshore Neon reef; coral documented under extreme heat stress and returned,
hue, saturation and light, solely through VISIONAUT — an artist-built video
synthesizer developed within INNER-WORK. The reef is left untouched. What
is restored is attention.

The cinematic language produced through VISIONAUT descends conceptually from the
experimental video technologies that shaped dNASAb’s practice during his
2006 residency at the Experimental Television Center, where he worked
directly with Nam June Paik’s pioneering Paik-Abe Wobbulator. That lineage
is not incidental; it establishes a continuum running from the origins of
experimental television, through sculpture and environmental cinema, to
contemporary computation and public participation.

REEFLINE x Andaz Miami x dNASAb_”Neon Reef_Visual Restoration”
This new immersive environmental cinema work began underwater, documenting Miami’s nearshore reef ecosystem during the height of this summer’s extreme ocean heat.

Filmed at sunrise and sunset with cinema cameras and aquatic film lights in the waters surrounding the REEFLINE project site, primarily between the Neon Reef and South Pointe Jetty, the footage captures a living ecosystem under visible heat stress.

I then began the restoration.

Working with the actual coral I filmed, I shift time, transform color, sculpt pixel structure, movement and light via the Visual synthesizer i built for this purpose—transmuting the experience of witnessing a stressed reef into the beauty and vitality this magnificent ecosystem deserves.

The work is created with VISIONAUT, my custom video synthesizer developed over the past seven months specifically for transforming environmental moving image in real time.

VISIONAUT extends a lineage that began for me in 2006 at the Experimental Television Center, where I built a sculpture on the screen of Nam June Paik’s Wobbulator and became immersed in the radical possibilities of experimental television as an artistic material.

Two decades later, I’m building the next generation of those instruments—and turning them toward environmental cinema.

An earthwork that moves no earth.

The future of conservation isn’t only scientific. It’s cultural.

REEFLINE is a public underwater sculpture park and hybrid reef 800ft off the shore of Miami Beach harnessing the power of the arts to reconnect people with the ocean. By bringing together a cross-disciplinary community of innovators around a shared belief—that humans can work with nature, and not against it—we’re creating living infrastructure that enhances marine ecosystems, while rewilding imagination and inviting everyone to learn, participate, and become part of the solution.

REEFLINE is amphibious by design. We move between land and sea, occasionally coming out of the water to make the invisible visible: a bridge between people and the ocean, reimagining what art, science, and cities can achieve together.

That’s a wrap for REEFLINE’s Big Goals! Over two weeks, we transformed the sands of Miami Beach into a place to play, learn, connect, and take action for our ocean.

Together, we:
🌊 Welcomed 15,000+ visitors
♻️ Collected 117 lbs of plastic, metal, glass, and other waste from the beach with @plasticfisherman
⚽️Engaged 680+ young people through camps and hands-on ocean learning
🏊 Led 30+ open-water swimmers on a sunrise journey to REEFLINE
🌍 Reached audiences in 15+ countries, generating 261.5M media impressions

To everyone who joined Team Ocean, shared our story, and made this project possible: thank you. The installation may have come to a close, but REEFLINE continues to grow just offshore, every single day.
