Community Partnerships with local ministries have been an important part of our weekly FCA huddles this fall. Our 1st guest was Zach Bush from Community Christian Council (CCC) in Waco. The students provided personal hygiene products for the many families that utilize the CCC for food and health related services. Our 2nd guest was Lori Schmidt from the House of Cherith. Our students created a special basket of personal care items and journals for each of the ladies who are currently living in their facility along with special items for their children. Our 3rd guest for 2023 was Jeff and Kim Dollar who started The Braxton Dollar Foundation in memory of their son Braxton who passed away from pediatric cancer.
These local ministries cater to different age groups and life circumstances but they have something beautiful in common…a passion to serve and see people come to know Jesus Christ. Our hope is that these students would see how important and life changing it can be to serve others and what an impact even they as teenagers can make. Together we can make a difference and these local ministries are doing just that!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Our feature this month is Kim Dollar.

She and her husband, Jeff, experienced something no parents should ever have to experience; they lost their beautiful 6-year-old son, Braxton, to a rare form of cancer — DIPG.

Little Braxton fought bravely for over 16 months, but on June 3, 2018, he succumbed to his illness, leaving the Dollar family shattered and heartbroken.

Jeff and Kim have made it their mission to remind other parents who have children with cancer that they are not alone.

In 2018, the Dollars founded the Braxton Dollar Foundation Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to help support children fighting pediatric brain cancer and their families. Their goal is to support families physically, financially and emotionally – wherever they are in their cancer fight.

On page 10, learn more about Braxton and the Dollar family, and how they are continuing what Braxton started by helping other parents with children who are battling cancer.

He had a big smile, and a personality that lit up the room. He was truly a special child, with so much love to give. 2 years ago today, sweet Braxton earned his wings. Braxton was a funny, outgoing, and energetic little boy. He loved superheroes, swimming, and helping his family. He was a very happy kid, and could light up any room. Braxton beat the odds, fighting courageously for 1 year and 4 months. I followed Braxton’s story, and he captured thousands of hearts around the world, including my own. He was a strong, tough, and brave young man who brought excitement to everyday. He was truly a special little boy, and inspired all who knew him. Sadly, on June 3rd, 2018 sweet Braxton earned his wings after a brave fight. He was 6 years old. Remembering Braxton:
Braxton Levi Dollar was born on February 20th, 2012 in Georgia. He was a goofy, smart, and energetic kid. Braxton loved cars and legos. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and grilling with his daddy. He had lots of energy, and was one of the friendliest kids you could meet. On January 20th, 2017 just one month before his 5th birthday, sweet Braxton was diagnosed with DIPG. Braxton fought hard for 1 year and 4 months. He beat the odds, and lived every day to the fullest, and always with a smile. Braxton inspired people all over the world with his outgoing personality and charm. Sadly, on June 3rd, 2018 sweet Braxton earned his wings after an extremely brave fight. He was 6 years old. We will forever keep Braxton in our hearts, and remember the pure joy and love he brought to live and everyone he met. It is with a heavy heart that I say that The Pirates League, a unique experience to Walt Disney World that I have spent the last 4.5 years with, will cease operations after 26 July of this year. I feel so lost. I will still have a job beyond then, but I was hoping I would remain there until I could continue my culinary journey. I don’t like my future being so uncertain. This journey has had plenty of ups and downs, but I cherish the whole ride. Part of the crew, part of the ship.
