Creating art for @breadandpuppet and you

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Yesterday we attended a @breadandpuppet performance at The Sanctuary. The nonprofit @cmcincy rehabbed the 2nd oldest Catholic church in Cincinnati into this community-focused event venue, and the beautiful space provided the perfect backdrop to the performance.

As for the show... I’d been aware of Bread & Puppet since my undergraduate days but, back then, I was too focused on school and work to make time to attend a show, although they were a regular occurrence in the hippie Upstate New York town.

The troupe has been on the experimental theater scene in the US since 1963, and its self-described “lived philosophy of art and activism” is on display in every aspect of the experience, from its “junk aesthetic” to its absurdist sense of pageantry. Gigantic papier-mâché puppets share the stage with musicians on stilts.

The themes of the brief vignettes—AI, ICE, East Wing demolition, illegal detention, and, above all, reverence for mother Earth—are alternately topical and universal, the topical folding into the universal at a quick, slightly whiplash-inducing clip that never stops being fun even as it tackles heavy or uncomfortable subjects.

This is a political protest disguised as a folk circus. This is a folk circus masquerading as a political protest. The two are intertwined because we cannot afford to compartmentalize, and the art of Bread & Puppet—cheap, crude, resourceful, proudly made by hand—is a middle finger proudly raised to “the radically wrong system” of the current day.

As the performance ends, the audience can stay behind to enjoy bread with aioli and peruse prints and other ephemera by the @breadandpuppetpress.

Cincinnati, there’s still time to catch the last local performance this afternoon [3pm, Sun 25 Oct]. Then it’s on to Buffalo and, in December, a residency at the @theater_for_the_new_city. Go.

How many gods does it take to realize the god we need while being confused and oppressed by the war-mongering class of the money empire? Yes, the neverminding god has to be defeated by our beloved sunrise-god. The god of logic, logically urges necessary revolution! So that our everyday Humdrum can flourish in equally necessary ecstasy and culminate in the god of darkness yielding to the celebration of the god of Palestinian resilience and resistance.

I discovered @breadandpuppet in exactly the way one might imagine: by stumbling upon an installation in the forest while admiring fall leaves in Vermont. I was immediately smitten. Then they performed in OKC last year and I fell in love with their work in a new way. And thanks to the work of an incredible committee of possibilitarians including @kelseykarper, @molliver.okc, and @doublesworded, they returned this year for an even bigger show and a community workshop.

Tonight, while OU beat Texas, the OKC Farmers Market was packed full of folks enjoying the community of live theater and explicitly political art. It was a beautiful and hopeful thing to witness.

I struggle to consider myself an artist. And even when I can grasp that, certainly not a performance artist. And, it was a joy to embody that space for a short time with so many incredible artists, teachers, and community members. If you see me icing my knees in the days ahead, know it was worth it for an intensive experience with the Bread and Puppet troupe.

Thanks to everyone who came for the art, for the politics, and for the people this evening. It was an honor and a pleasure to share the space with you.

Always a joy to see bread and puppet. Almost makes me want to be a possibilitarian.

Bread and Puppet Theater (+ Press!) in Cleveland last night!!!

Touring from Vermont, this troop is the TRUTH. They are brilliantly weird - I love it all, but especially the way they balance the humor with the heavy. Firm denials done in joyous resistance. The Up-Side Down World Circus: the perfect America 250 crit to buoy the soul, and hold all the things together. Bread and Puppet Press was also representing with their relief prints (also, adore 😍).

I was talking to my uncle earlier today. He confirmed that he and my grandma saw Bread and Puppet together in Kent in the late 1970s. 💜 He was really jazzed they’re still at it. (Then it was Nixon and other* illegal wars, same same but different times.)

If you don’t know, now you know! Check them out. Thank you, @breadandpuppetpress @breadandpuppet 🫶
