Did you know that here at 37 Looe Street we’re at the heart of a bread-forward power nexus?

Come fuel your mothers and prove your dough at tonight’s Optimizer! Companion performance from @bred.company - part of @juliapond_ Metabolizer show.

Not only that, but we’re across the street from sacred sandwich shamans @opecafe and round the corner from masterbakers @heylbakery and vegan valkyries of wraps, bao buns and focaccia @almanac.cafe.plymouth. There are even yeasty whispers in the air of more buns in new ovens.

It’s all about fungal growth here in the Barbican! Eat bread, see art!

I can’t believe this installation is at the halfway mark. Metabolizer is open @37looestreet for two more weeks and then our closing event 11 March.

So far our most productive day saw over 4 hours of dancing in the pod. Let’s keep that number growing Plymouth. Watch your dance affect the data in real time.

The Optimizer! Companion performances continue tonight with @bred.company, 4 March with @heni_hale and 11 March with @bryonygillard

The Optimizer! performance series continues on 25 Feb.

Can’t wait to screen the first preview of @bred.company new film Distributing Dough, a short and typically sticky take on the ethics of patronage commissioned by the Science Museum research project Museums and Industry; Long Histories of Collaboration. This will be a chance to see it in the intimate setting of @37looestreet in Plymouth before an official outing later this year.

I’ll also perform the Manager-festo, a solo about how to stay at your most productive, as a veneer of corporate lingo slowly cracks to reveal fleshier, doughier underbellies.

Plus bar open, general hangouts, etc 🪩

Come through! Book a free spot with the link in bio.

Installation open from 1pm, bar from 6, film & performance at 7.

Amazing film team:
@manualbrecht (performer, creative collaborator)
@ted_dy (film, creative collaborator)
Jess Latowicki: writing, dramaturgy, performance
@heidirustgaard Movement consulting

Introducing Optimizer! And the invited artists who will share performance, film, essay-performance, performance-lecture and more over the course of the Metabolizer installation @37looestreet

Free to attend with a cash bar, 6-9pm, these events punctuate and animate the installation. Loosely inspired by the corporate practice “lunch and learn” they are a convivial curation with each evening in dialogue with different facets of Metabolizer. Come to one, or come to all.

Programme:
@manualbrecht 11 Feb: Material Entanglements
@kyra_norman_ 18 Feb: Up Across and Along
@bred.company 25 Feb; Distributing Dough (featuring @manualbrecht and film by @ted_dy and Manager-festo
@heni_hale 4 March: Industrial Democracy in Suspension
@bryonygillard 11 March (also the closing night!): Upstream

(And of course next Thursday 5 Feb is the opening)

Come see their incredible work and do some mingling and Metabolizing. Optimizer! Moves to share space and resources with other artists, and to acknowledge the co-authorship and networked enabling that is always part of making and performing whether or not it is formally recognised.

Very happy to share that the installation BRED by @juliapond will be finding its feet in its first vacant high street space at Barnstaple’s Green Lanes. It’s been a beautiful experience to collaborate on transmuting this piece into work that public can simply walk into.

BRED has been developed by @juliapond @manualbrecht @outdoors_egirl with production consultancy from @heidirustgaard.

Thank you to @northdevoncouncil for commissioning, to @pdsw_org and @tripspace_yogaanddance for residency and development support.

Very happy to share here that my installation BRED will be finding its feet in its first vacant high street space at Barnstaple’s Green Lanes. It’s been a beautiful, slow burn experience to work on transmuting this piece into work that public can simply walk into.

BRED has been developed with @manualbrecht @outdoors_egirl with production consultancy from @heidirustgaard.

Thank you to @northdevoncouncil for commissioning, to @pdsw_org and @tripspace_yogaanddance for residency and development support. And forever grateful to the initial research support during my MFA from @trinitylaban @_independentdance @florence_peake

It’s taken me a while to share some snippets of our residency in @pdsw_org in Bournemouth for @bred.company. These thoughts aren’t gonna be perfect. I feel a little vulnerable sharing them here. I’m interested in what you all think. The whole project of BRED is about work, performance, value and productivity — themes that became unexpectedly visceral when I was hospitalised with flu two days into the work. I failed to work, perform, or demonstrate my value as an artist because I was hooked up to IVs. 🤣
The truth is I was pushing my health to make this artistic opportunity happen, and it backfired. It took a while to recover. This all brought up the question of why I pushed so hard, and the context we work within. I felt I had to push, because this felt like a one off chance in some ways. The sense of scarcity of funds, of opportunities, that so many freelance dance artists face was a factor. We work 3x as hard for 1/3 of the cash available in other sectors, and it all feels pretty precarious (and I’m one of the lucky ones with a bit of security)

It’s important to say that even the opportunity to go and work on durational public improvisation in a beautiful studio is a ridiculous privilege. PDSW were incredibly supportive of the difficult situation and kind. I hope to continue a relationship with them. Yet, I am still asking how the UK dance ecology can shift away from this sense of scarcity, to find new modes of making, supporting and reflecting? There wasn’t, for example, space or funding to reschedule the residency. These are one shot deals. This creates added pressures for the artist.
It made me think about how the arts sector in general mirrors the violence and competition of capital - and how we might shift towards more equitable practices, how hierarchies and power balances can and should change.

Finally I am so grateful. For having the artistic collaboration and friendship of @manualbrecht and @outdoors_egirl who took amazing care of me, for my family who took over and for being healthy again.

Dear TripCommunity, 🧡

We hope you are well, despite the sad news of The Queen's passing.

We acknowledge that the turbulence that the end of an era brings is challenging for everyone to process. We also acknowledge that everyone needs to do this processing in different ways and for different reasons.

We have decided to go ahead with Make Movement Matter Open Day Festival in the belief that by celebrating the arts and community we offer celebration to life.

Additionally during the next 10 days our studio will remain open as usual, until further notice.

It would be great to see you tomorrow, we can't wait to host you!
