Since this seems to be about the only thing I post, please enjoy 1:45 of Radar giving Matt shit about his food. He’s turned her into an absolute menace in her old age, zero manners anymore.

Earlier she punched him in the face really hard because he took too long to give her a piece of sausage 🤣

Might have gotten a little bit spoiled for the 10th birthday yesterday! The bestest thing is this super ultra extra plushy blanket that grandma made. And grandma says that no one else is allowed to share, it’s just for Radar, not even people 😂

So the surgery attempt did not go as planned. During surgery prep her heart rate went really low on the opioid they used, and then it took longer than it should have for her to respond to the reversal medication.

So they want to rebook and try again another day with a different opioid. They have her in recovery monitoring now and they think I should be able to pick her up around noon.

So… not great news. There’s a lump on Radars back left hock. It’s squishy and soft in some parts and hard in others. Our lovely vet did two fine needle biopsies yesterday. Today she called and said they’re full of spindle cells, which could be cancerous or completely benign. She thinks we need to do a larger biopsy and then the sample gets sent to pathologist.

I’m not going to lie, I’m freaking out and full of anxiety. And unfortunately it’s not just about the bump and its potential. I’m also panicking about the money. Yesterday was $160. The larger biopsy will be $500-700. If we were to just try and remove the whole lump at once and send it for pathology, that would be between $1000-1300.

I do not for one second begrudge vets their fees. But I also feel pretty stuck. Currently I’m in a job that I absolutely love, but the pay is honestly pretty terrible. It’s not far above minimum wage, and minimum wage in alberta is $15 an hour. It’s also a temporary position and my contract is up at the end of August. Sometimes they extend people’s contracts later into the fall or through the winter, but maybe not. Because I’ve been doing side gig yard projects for people, I can probably scrape up $500, but beyond that… I don’t know.

If it comes back cancerous, the solution with the best chance of her living as long as possible is probably complete amputation of that leg. I 100% know I cannot afford that kind of surgery.

I’m beyond frustrated that at 37 I’m in a job that essentially has me living on the poverty line, and I cannot afford the medical care that my senior dog will need as she ages. It makes me feel like a terrible person. Like maybe all those people were right who say if you can’t afford all these extra things, don’t get a pet.

But also, I know for a fact that I would not be here if I did not have this dog. Depression is pretty heavy and there are more days than not where my responsibility to take care of and love her is the only reason I make it through a day. I’m pretty scared of what will happen on that inevitable day I have to come home from the vet to an empty house.

Everything is a lot right now, and I’m struggling. Wish us luck it’s benign.

The last few days in snaps.
1. Christmas Eve dog walk.
2&3. Two pileated woodpeckers at my house Christmas morning!
4. Whipped cream cleanup duty.
5. Christmas Day dog walk including our friends dog since they were cooking us dinner.
6. My dad’s 70’s grad suit jacket that fits me perfectly now and is perfectly aggressively christmassy with my excellent red pants.
7&8. My Lego bonsai tree has been snowed upon.
We have excellent friends. In spite of this being our first Christmas since grandma died and having no family here but us, we felt very loved and welcomed and taken care of by fantastic friends. We are very lucky to have such an amazing friend group.
