Running through our history: Brixton’s walls 🖤🏃🏾‍♀️

Continuing my BHM run through Brixton, exploring the stories told through its public art.

🧡 We Are Brixton, by Create Not Destroy, brings together portraits and familiar local landmarks beneath a bold statement of belonging.

Community, culture and pride, painted onto the walls.

#BlackHistoryMonth #Brixton #BlackCulture #BrixtonMurals #StreetArt RunningThroughHistory

🎶 What’s Going On, by Dreph, celebrates the 50th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s iconic album while also referencing the 1981 Brixton uprising.

The protest signs draw on the album’s lyrics and song titles, carrying messages about love, peace, equality and protecting our children.

Music and art giving voice to questions that still resonate today. 🖤

☮️ Nuclear Dawn, by Brian Barnes and Dale McCrea, depicts the threat of nuclear war looming over London—a powerful call for peace.

Together, these murals made me think about community, creativity and the power of art to speak out.

One of my favourite things about these runs is discovering how much there is to learn when we pause along the way.

In collaboration with Bridge & Bloom, combining movement, art and history to explore the stories around us. 🖤

Running through our history: Railton Road 🖤🏃🏾‍♀️

Another stop on my BHM run through Brixton brought me to A Wall of Respect for the Radical Histories of Railton Road, outside 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning.

Designed by Jacob V Joyce and Monique Jackson and painted with the R.A.D Mural Collective in 2021, it commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Brixton uprisings.

There is so much history within this one wall. Figures including Olive Morris, Liz Obi, Darcus Howe and Pearl Alcock appear alongside references to community spaces, sound system culture, education and resistance to racism and police harassment.

And the stories continue beneath our feet.

Painted onto the nearby pavement is poetry by Malika Booker, bringing together the pain of stop and search, the defiance of resistance and the music of everyday Black life. Part of the 81 Acts of Exuberant Defiance street poetry project, it gives you another reason to stop and look closely.

Having grown up in Brixton, these runs are giving me a reason to pause and learn more about the history of the streets I know. Stories told through images on walls and words on the pavement — keeping that history visible.

Movement, art and curiosity, with a little more understanding at every stop. 🖤

Running through our history: Stockwell Memorial Gardens 🖤🏃🏾‍♀️

Another stop on my BHM run, and another reason to slow down and look closer.

The war memorial honours local people who lost their lives in the First World War. But the mural beside it tells a wider story of Stockwell’s community, including the Empire Windrush and the Caribbean arrivals who made Stockwell and Brixton their home. A reminder that Black British history is woven into the history of these streets.

There’s also a portrait of Vincent van Gogh, who once lived nearby on Hackford Road. As an art teacher, I loved discovering that connection!

Nearby stands Bronze Woman: a mother holding her child, inspired by Guyanese poet Cécile Nobrega’s poem. It honours Black Caribbean women and the love, sacrifice and determination carried across generations.

Different stories sharing one small space — remembrance, migration, creativity and motherhood. This is why I’m enjoying these runs: discovering how much history sits around us when we take the time to notice.

I was honoured to attend the launch of @africadesignweek last night @kettners.soho.
Coming in July 2027, ADW will celebrate African & Diaspora Creatives, and if there is anyone who can pull it off, it’s the powerhouse that is @bilenzeremariam, and her incredible team, bursting with energy and charisma, I cannot wait to see what they do next year.

It’s about time.

Thank you Africa Design Week for your hospitality and an incredible evening filled to the brim with all the beauty that our homeland has to offer. In what feels like bleak times at the moment, it’s heartwarming, joyful and humbling to meet such open, friendly people - just some of the amazing designers, artists, teachers and artisans I met are tagged.

Huge congratulations to the ADW team!

(I had many kind compliments on my dress, so I thought I’d tag the very talented designer @taniquecoburn too.
Can you tell I’m not a mirror selfie kinda gal! 😂)

Running through our history: Caroline Chinakwe 🖤🏃🏾‍♀️

My next BHM run stop took me to Outernet at Tottenham Court Road to see Caroline Chinakwe’s This Is Us showcase.

I already love Caroline’s work and own a few of her T-shirts, so seeing her pieces fill these huge screens was something special. Now I just need to invest in a larger piece for my home! 😍

Caroline is a Lagos-born, UK-based mixed-media artist whose work brings together African cultural influences and contemporary Western aesthetics. I love the bold colours, layered patterns and the way Black identity takes centre stage.

For Black History Month, 26 pieces from This Is Us are being displayed at Outernet. The collection celebrates the many sides of identity, making space for beauty, joy, vulnerability and strength.

I ended up waiting about an hour to see it. Just when I thought I might miss out, the screen operator kindly put it on for me. It was worth the wait! 🖤

This is another part of what I want to explore through these runs: celebrating the Black artists creating today, alongside the history and stories that have shaped us.

Running through our history: Children at Play 🖤🏃🏾‍♀️

I grew up seeing this mural every day. Back then, it was just a painting on a wall to me; part of the scenery, something familiar that I never really questioned. I didn’t realise how special it was or know the story behind it.

Returning to it on my BHM run gave me a reason to look again.

Painted by Stephen Pusey and completed in 1982, Children at Play sits behind Brixton Academy on Stockwell Park Walk. It was commissioned as part of Lambeth’s mural programme following the 1981 Brixton uprisings.

Local residents helped shape its direction. They wanted a more celebratory image of their community, and the result was a colourful scene of children from different racial backgrounds playing together — full of movement, energy and joy.

Knowing that now makes me see a familiar piece of my childhood differently. It’s art that carries the voices and hopes of the community I grew up in.

That’s what this series is about for me: combining movement, art, history and curiosity to discover the stories around us — including the ones we’ve walked past all our lives.

In collaboration with Bridge & Bloom Creative Arts CIC, connecting movement, creativity and community stories. 🖤

Black History Month: running through our history. 🖤

This BHM, I’m combining movement, art and Black British history — and I’m excited to be doing it in collaboration with Bridge & Bloom Creative Arts CIC. 🎨🌸

Bridge & Bloom works to bridge gaps within the creative community, creating opportunities through arts education, artist support, mentoring, apprenticeships and workshops. So it felt like the perfect collaboration for a series exploring the Black stories, artists and creativity that exist all around us.

For the first run, I took to the streets of South London, running between murals, monuments and places connected to Black culture, resistance, creativity and community.

Some I knew. Some I discovered for the first time. And every stop gave me a reason to slow down, look closer and learn something.

And this is just the beginning.

Throughout October, SheBuilds x Bridge & Bloom will be sharing more of the artworks, people and stories behind the places I visited — bringing together movement, creativity and community to celebrate Black History Month.

Because our history isn’t only something to read about. It’s all around us. 🖤

Worked for 15s

As we head into Notting Hill Carnival weekend ❤️💛💚, I wanted to take a moment to look back at last week’s private view/bbok lauch of Carnival of Resistance at @acelebrationofdemonstration, hosted at @brixton.village.

It was a real pleasure for Bridge & Bloom Creative Arts CIC to facilitate the meeting and interview between photographers/ visual activista and co-authors Wayne Campbell & Wayne Crichlow and the brilliant @sundivas / @sunkissedtv_. 🎥📸

The SunDivas have now posted a reel and it is being featured across their social media platforms — so please head over, watch, share and support. ✨

This book arrives as we celebrate 60 years of Notting Hill Carnival — its history, culture, community, creativity and resistance.

📚 Carnival of Resistance, by Wayne Campbell and Wayne Crichlow, brings together 15 years of photography documenting Carnival beyond the spectacle — from Panorama, J’ouvert and Mas to sound systems, community, identity and resistance.

If you would like to purchase a copy, visit @acelebrationofdemonstration or contact the photographers directly:

Emerging designer spotlight: Sabina Dragusanu

Sabina Dragusanu’s work immediately caught my eye at New Designers for how wearable, sculptural and beautifully resolved the pieces felt.

What I found especially exciting was our conversation about how the addition of wood elevated the metal forms, giving each piece greater warmth, texture and presence. Sabina then showed us how, by taking the wooden elements away, the designs could transition into more minimal metal pieces that felt lighter, simpler and easier to wear every day.

Her collection felt thoughtful, elegant and highly wearable, while still pushing contemporary jewellery in an interesting direction.

Emerging designer spotlight: Louise Jackson-Rowan

Although I didn’t get the opportunity to meet Louise, her glass installation immediately caught my eye at New Designers.

The suspended fragments of coloured glass transformed as the light moved through them, creating shifting reflections, shadows and patterns across the surrounding walls. The installation felt delicate yet architectural, encouraging you to view it from different angles and notice how the work changed with movement.

Having visited the Julio Le Parc exhibition the day before, Louise’s work resonated strongly with what I had just experienced. Le Parc’s practice explored light, colour, movement and reflective surfaces to create changing visual effects, and I could see a beautiful connection in the way Louise’s glass pieces activated the space around them.

Emerging designer spotlight: Joe Gurr

Joe Gurr’s work immediately caught my eye at New Designers for its beautiful balance of sustainability, material innovation and luxury.

The pieces appeared remarkably similar to leather, yet were developed through more sustainable material processes. Their layered, woven and fragmented surfaces created a rich, tactile quality that invited you to look more closely.

I especially loved how the cut-out forms interacted with light. As light passed through and around the materials, the shadows became part of the work—creating new patterns, depth and movement across the wall.

The earthy palette, aged surfaces and focus on material character also reminded me of the distinctive, handcrafted aesthetic associated with Timothy Oulton.
