Brighton coast to Norfolk coast!

A wonderful week of music, storytelling, and filmmaking exploring voices from the past.

Huge thanks to @brightonemf for supporting @dowlandsfoundry ‘Nightly Cares’ programme with actor Will Keen and viol player Sam Stadlen. A truly magical evening.

Followed by a brilliant 48hrs in King’s Lynn filming for
‘Into the Mystic’, with @mirabelledominewalley @lukee.walker and team exploring the extraordinary story of Margery Kempe.

Can’t wait to see the results of this stunning film!

We had an amazing time performing at @brightonemf, both in the Emerging Artists Showcase and Clubnight! Across a busy day, we shared music by Boismortier, Le Roux, Couperin, Leclair and Rameau. It was lovely to receive some kind words about our playing from @latestbrighton and @scenemagazineuk afterwards. Bravo to all the other emerging artists that took part!

A little snippet from 'The Wren', a collaborative show weaving music and animation together. Inspired by Irish Christmas traditions, storytelling and historical magic lantern projections, it features an animation by @matthewjamesrobins and arrangements of Irish Christmas carols from @carinadrury and @taraviscardi

This little snippet features the Wren Hornpipe, from Francis O'Neill's collection, and the imagery depicts an eagle flying high into the sky. Project developed in partnership with @brightonemf DreamLab

Is there any connection between Tartini and the UK?

Even if the main character of our tour, Giuseppe Tartini, is somewhat forgotten nowadays, he was one of the most admired composers among 18th-century British audiences and musicians.

In this new post in our series, you’ll discover his connections with the UK through the figures of John Walsh and one of his biggest fans... Charles Burney!

Introducing our wonderful musicians for our Brighton SongPath this Sunday 25 Oct!

🎼 Leo Duarte (oboe) is principal oboist of the Academy of Ancient Music and a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He performs regularly at the BBC Proms and Glyndebourne Festival and London’s Wigmore Hall. @duarteleoleo

🎶 Kate Conway (viola da gamba) is a member of Ensemble Molière, a BBC New Generation Baroque Ensemble supported by BBC Radio 3 and the National Centre for Early Music, as well as the Chelys Consort of Viols, who made their Wigmore Hall debut in 2019 and record regularly for BIS.

🎵 They will be joining singers and SongPath co-founders Jess Dandy & Joanna Harries. @jessicadandy @joannaharries

We'll also be joined by Ben from the wonderful Brighton Permaculture Trust at Home Farm Orchard to hear about their Sussex apple trees - and maybe if we sing a Wassail we might get a taste of fresh apple juice... 🍎🍏 @brightonpermaculture

We’re especially happy to be returning to BREMF, a place that feels like one of our musical homes. As alumni of the Emerging Artists scheme, this festival played an important part in our journey, helping us grow as musicians and as an ensemble, and opening so many doors for us when we first came to the UK.

We look forward to sharing this special programme with you in such a special place for us! 🎻🖤

Bryd one brere
(Trad. 13th century song)

Bryd one brere, brid, brid one brere
Kynd is come of love, love to crave
Blythful biryd, on me thu rewe
Or greyth, lef, greith thu me my grave.

🐦 Bird on a briar, bird, bird on a briar,
We come from love, and love we crave,
Blissful bird, have pity on me,
Or dig, love, dig for me my grave. 🐦

Some beautiful memories from our concert in Brighton on 10 October, as part of the Brighton Early Music Festival. ✨ @brightonemf

It was a very special honour to be the first emerging ensemble from Italy to be hosted by the Festival. From the moment we arrived, we were met with such kindness and generosity, and the warmth of the audience made sharing our music in Brighton a truly memorable experience.

We are deeply grateful to the Festival and to everyone who made us feel so welcome. 🎶 ♥️

BREMF’s Emerging Artists Showcase at St Paul’s dazzled: Les Acolytes’ courtly French excess, Vega’s mournful countertenor and lute songs, Themelion’s jaunty, tight Handel and Leclair, and Bruegel Consort’s Fayrfax, holding us at the edge of reverence. Superb homemade cakes too....

What connects astronomy, Tartini’s Devil, and our UK tour? Discover Jérôme Lalande: the astronomer who helped predict Halley’s Comet’s return, catalogued nearly 50,000 stars, and recorded observations of Neptune before its identity was recognised. But he also wrote about Tartini and the Devil…

Follow us as we explore the life and music of Tartini and discover some of the finest compositions of the 18th century.
