Your support directly fuels the future of incredible talent like this! 🌟

As we raise funds for our Dance Guild Challenge Grant (use the 🔗 in our bio to donate), hear from alum Britt Hew on how @btwhspva built the foundation for her extraordinary career:

From Britt: When I discuss my career path, I usually say I wouldn't be where I am without having first attended Booker T.

Having just moved across the country with my family, I arrived as a worried sophomore transfer student and was surprised by the warmness of the acceptance and support from my teachers, and from students, to whom I am still close today.

The training I undertook over the following three years laid a strong foundation for my future: I sang operas and musicals with student orchestras/bands, studied difficult jazz and choral pieces, and performed them at renowned programs like TMEA and the @montereyjazzfestival .

At my @juilliardschool callback, the faculty were impressed with my resume--opportunities like the ones I had were rare at the high school level, and they even asked more about the program and its leaders.

When I started at Juilliard, I was already adapted to the challenging curriculum there, having balanced the workload I did as a Booker T. student, and even tested out of a year of ear training. Now, as a professional, I still reference the advice my teachers gave me at Booker T., and having just returned to the school for a residency, I am confident the present generation of student artists is being prepared for an exceptional future.

❤️ @britt.hew is an NYC–based soprano, composer, and creative technologist. A Juilliard graduate and Juilliard Preparatory Division faculty member, she is a substitute vocalist and keyboardist with the Philip Glass Ensemble and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Theatre of Versailles, and Holland Park among others. Her work spans contemporary opera, new music, and interdisciplinary performance.

Happy 6th birthday to Maxi — 90 lbs of pure love and the center of my universe. We don’t deserve dogs and I definitely don’t deserve Max. He’s gentle, loyal, adventurous (we are currently in Canada together), and somehow also very silly?! Becoming a part‑time country dog has made his personality even bigger, and he fully believes the deed of the house is in his name 🤣

An ambassador of good will, he loves my friends, my students, and his sister Teetee. And this year he finally decided the car isn’t that bad — because adventure always awaits when he gets out.

Grateful every day to navigate life with this gorgeous soul

FESTIVAL RECAP
The eighth edition of Off the Beaten Path featured a number of renowned performers from America and Europe. Soprano Britt Hewitt was one of our special guests. She took part in the festival's first week with concerts in Dobrinishte, Gotse Delchev, and Kovachevitsa.
.
We invited her to perform the world premiere of David Ludwig's Five Songs After Dimitar Peshev — a work dedicated to the rescue of Bulgaria's Jewish citizens during World War II. Britt also brought to the stage the music of Juhi Bansal (Love, Loss, and Exile) and Hana Ishizaki (Aftertime), adding new voices in contemporary music to the program.
.
The American soprano became part of the Off the Beaten Path family this year — and we hope this is the beginning of many creative collaborations with her.
