❤️!!! @capital.bg

Over the summer, Eva in Year 11 performed in BYMT’s Paper Stars, a production exploring the life of P.L. Travers, the writer of Mary Poppins.

This was a wonderful opportunity for Eva to be surrounded by people who shared the same passion as her and to to spend a summer completely immersed in the world she wants to be in.

Eva also spent an intensive week at Emil Dale, developing her audition skills and learning more about the industry she hopes to be part of.

We’re incredibly lucky to have a Performing Arts department that gives pupils the confidence to take their ambitions beyond the classroom and it’s brilliant to see Eva doing exactly that.

BYMT 2026 - Technical Difficulties

I love getting to come back to work with all these amazing people every year, and the joyful chaos that is the process, and the utter chaos of a show that goes wrong with a ‘laser safety curtain’ and ‘missing’ pyro…

Prepare the confetti cannons!!

In 1975, a man was told he never said “I love you” enough — so he wrote a song saying the opposite, and it became immortal.

“I’m Not in Love” is a song by the British band 10cc, written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman. Released in the UK in May 1975 as their second single, it became the group’s number one hit in the UK between 1973 and 1978, topping the British singles chart for two weeks.

It also became the band’s biggest hit outside the UK, reaching number one in Canada and Ireland, and the top ten in several other countries including Australia, West Germany, New Zealand, Norway and the United States.

Stewart wrote it primarily in response to his wife’s remark that he didn’t tell her he loved her often enough. Instead of a straight love song, he answered with denial — a man insisting he’s not in love while every line betrays him. That tension, wrapped in one of the most haunting vocal soundscapes ever recorded, is why it still stops people fifty years later.

Some songs age. This one just keeps echoing. 🎧

🌊 SEA CHANGE 🌊

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another youth production at Birmingham Hippodrome, this time at the end of August I went to see BYMT’s Sea Change.

Set in Blackwater Cove during a rare tidal eclipse, the show follows selkies who are able to leave the sea and live among humans for one week, forcing them to decide where they really belong. 🧜‍♀️🌊

I thought the story itself was really interesting, particularly the ideas around identity, belonging and choosing between two different worlds. The folk-inspired music, shanties and nautical feel also fitted the setting really well.

It wasn’t quite as much to my personal taste as some of the other youth productions I’ve seen, but here was still a lot to admire. The young cast threw themselves into it and there was clearly a huge amount of work and preparation behind the production.

I always think it’s brilliant seeing young performers getting the opportunity to perform new musical theatre in a proper theatre setting, and Sea Change definitely had some lovely moments. 💙

🌊🦭Had such fun with the folk element of ‘Sea Change’ - the jigs and ceilidhs were a particular favourite of mine! 🪗
