The Grid Begins is a sculpture by Lisa Young commissed by @broached_consulting @broached_commissions that I had the pleasure to oversee whilst at Broached Commissions.

The Grid Begins reproduces a map depicting the first three years of land sales in Melbourne, following the adoption of Hoddle’s Grid as a system and tool for town planning and land division. Close inspection shows that the cost of land in Melbourne more than tripled for plots of a similar size between 1837 and 1839. By using a public record document as the basis for this sculpture, the work highlights Melbourne’s history of urban development, where land ownership was established from the earliest years as an avenue to acquire and retain wealth.

The Grid Begins is by Lisa Young @lisayoun_g with creative direction by Broached Commissions and technical assistance by @k_k_a__p. It was fabricated by Huw Severn Smith and @axolotlgroup and documented by Dean Lever.

Batman’s Hill Marker: Design led by yours truly. This marked the first project handed to me when I started at Broached. Two years later…

This artwork celebrates the surveying of the Melbourne Grid from Batman’s Hill, where this precinct now stands. Inverting the view of a colonial era theodolite, artist Maree Clarke created a river reed kaleidoscope within the viewing lens, creating a First Nations perspective on this primary location for the colonisation of Victoria. The theodolite design is based on a 19th C antique. The plinth represents the construction of vertical architecture within Hoddle’s grid.

In the laneway between Nicholas Hall and 150 Lonsdale St, take a moment to view the Gulinj-al Ngulu Kerr-up-non Biik-u (The Voice of Kulin Kin Country) artwork by @ree_clarke , commissioned for Wesley Place.

In a custom metal case designed by @broached_consulting and fabricated by @axolotlgroup , it is just one of the many unique Indigenous art pieces for our community to enjoy at Wesley Place.

I haven’t posted anything for a while, and whilst it’s always preferable to post completed work I did want to share this unrealised project in order to thank the amazing team of collaborators both here in Melbourne and in Japan who worked very hard for nearly 12 months to bring this so close to fruition.

After our successful collaboration for the NGV’s 2020 Triennial Kengo Kuma & Associates and I were commissioned to design a permanent outdoor pavilion in Melbourne. The pavilion consists of thousands of timber modules lined with mirror finish stainless steel and constructed from She-oak timber, a tree that was once abundant on the proposed site.

The form of the module was derived from a pattern I developed from a sheoak seed pod (see photos) The stacked and rotated modules formed a curving archway that would kaleidoscopically rearrange the view to outside as you walked through. Many thanks to the many talented people who were involved.

AXIONOME — is my climate deviation tracker, calculating & displaying each day’s local temperature in the critical context of global 1-3•C annual average warming.

By day, Axionome collects hourly temperatures from its surrounding city block, comparing the data against local historical weather records. By night, two lights begin their movement across the facade, revealing the day’s anomalous reading in an orbital dance that lasts until midnight, when the tool resets & begins its count again.

Situated in a historically Greek quarter of the city, Axionome derives its name from the Ancient Greek roots axios – meaning ‘to be in balance’, and nomos – as being of ‘a rhythm and law.’

The choreography of Axionome’s two orbital lights is programmed in reference to the oldest & most instinctive systems of human time-keeping: the movements of the sun and moon.

Axionome is the only such public climate deviation tracker in the world.

A central motif of the art curation for The Continental Hotel, Sorrento, is the orchid. Naturalist Edith Coleman, who spent her last years in Sorrento, was famous for discovering how orchids propagate. This work is accompanied by the orchid motif panelling at the reception desk and a first edition 19th botanical specimen book on Australian orchids.

Orchid Pixel was designed in 2021 by Adam Goodrum for The Continental Hotel Sorrento.

Conceptualised by Stanislava Pinchuk with creative direction by Broached Commissions, “Axionome” transitions between a minimalist mural during the day and a climate change driven temperature deviation tracker by night. This work installed on the former Bureau of Meteorology building in Melbourne stands as the world’s sole public climate deviation tracker.

“Axionome” derives its name from the Ancient Greek roots ‘axios’ – meaning ‘to be in balance’, and nomos – as being of ‘a rhythm and law.’ The work collects hourly temperatures from its surrounding city block and compares the data against local historical weather records. The two orbital lights within the work are programmed in reference to the oldest & most instinctive systems of human time-keeping: the movements of the sun and moon.

This is the largest permanent work to date by the artist, who began her career in Melbourne before achieving international recognition for works that embed geopolitical data from migration, war, and climate catastrophe into paper works and minimalist sculpture.
