Dolly Parton might be the closest thing we will ever have to a leader who *walked the walk* of her convictions. I cannot stop crying. 😭💔

Beyond the absolute joy she brought to the world through her art, humor and style, she CHANGED lives through the good she was quietly doing all the time, from donating one free book per month to children through her Imagination Library, to funding recovery efforts for wildfire victims, to supporting LGBTQ+ and Black communities — the list goes on and on.

The world is a better place because she was born. Period! I hope we can all do her memory justice by loving on each other more, helping each other out more, and refusing to give in when society tries to divide us. 💖 I never posted my whole “9 to 5” act — so this one is for you, Dolly.

RIP, you beautiful, beautiful soul. My idol. 💔

Don’t judge, kids. 😂 The hoops were Cadillac-sized in those days, and there were *no online tutorials.* Or in person ones! 😅 I was also still unaware that people would hire me to do character numbers, so I was just dancing around with my big Bertha body rocker.

And you know what? It was the best time ever. I have such great memories of the Detroit Roller Derby, the original Theatre Bizarre on State Fair, trying to learn any moves with no info, hanging with the tiny but mighty crowd of Detroit circus folk. I got into grad school in 2006 and moved to the west coast — and I wasn’t sure if I was going to have the same kind of hoop life. (Spoiler alert: I dropped out of grad school to keep hooping on the west coast.)

I got so much better at performing in subsequent years, and I learned SO much from people I met along the way. But it’s nice to have come full circle and be back in the Detroit area making art in the second half of my life.

My thesis for my all-women-over-40 project @broadmindedshow is that women have no expiration date, and beyond that, it’s so clear to me that my acts are more interesting now than they were 20 years ago. We gain value with time. 💖

It was an incredible honor to have @detroitstylinskateclub founder @treze.baby and Vice President @brightone826 in our April @broadmindedshow! These ladies have been SO busy advancing Detroit style skating. Just before our spring production, Patreze was named chairperson of Culture Roll, established by USA Roller Sports to highlight distinct regional rhythm skating traditions. Given all their incredible shows and coaching work with the Detroit Stylin Skate club, we were SO grateful that Patreze and Jela still found time to represent for women artists over 40 in Broadminded Revue.

You gotta follow these ladies to watch them continually take Detroit style skating to the next level! 🔥

On Sept. 5, at AB Ford Park, @karirevolva of @broadmindedshow and Beverly Larsen of @gemini_circles are teaming up with the Hot Flash Goddess Movement’s Menopause Awareness Walk to bring the hooping fun. 🤩 Kari and Bev will host a hoop station where walk attendees can give it a spin, laugh, and feel joy. Think you “can’t hoop”? Think again! These ladies have beginner hoops for adults and the skills to coach you through everything from getting a hoop started — to doing some jazzy moves. This era is a *revolution* for perimenopausal and menopausal women, in more ways than one!

Hope to see you at this one-mile, accessible walk in a beautiful park, with fun activities and an opportunity to make new friends and share our stories.

50 and still hooping in a headstand. 💥 True story: In the process of producing @broadmindedshow — an all-women-over-40 revue — in Detroit, producer @karirevolva got a comment urging her to take precautions in case “older folks hurt themselves” on stage. The person who said it prob wouldn’t think of himself as ageist. But he said what he said.

It sparked an idea for her act. 😉

And she would love to see him do her act without hurting *himself.*

This is 50. 🌟

If anyone needs to hear it, women are stronger and more powerful than EVER, with every passing year. When I was in my late 30s, I felt terrified, like my performance career was coming to and end. Our culture makes it SO HARD for women to be taken seriously, to take up space, to prove we matter — just because we are aging. The most natural thing in the world.

I had to create and produce @broadmindedshow just to have a place to continue to perform while standing in my full power, alongside an entire cast of women doing the same. It’s not easy to constantly fight this idea that women are stamped with an expiration date, and past a certain age, we have nothing to offer. But I will do the work again and again of standing in the spotlight and saying LOOK AT THIS because I’ve now seen Broadminded audiences in more than one city — crying with relief after the show. 😢💖

How amazing is it to see with your own eyes that women have MORE power over time? We gain value. And we are DONE being considered invisible. We refuse to stop doing what we love, and we invite everyone to join us in feeling joy and hope and life — forever. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Broadminded.

Victory! I couldn’t even step one foot beyond the backstage at the end of Broadminded Women Over 40 Revue on Saturday — without the venue guy guarding the curtain saying, “That was the best show I’ve ever seen. Is it happening again? If I had known what this was going to be, I would have brought more people!”

And that’s how it was, every step I took out into the crowd. I kept getting teary eyed people telling me how inspired they were to see us absolutely destroying ageism. I think even when well-intentioned folks hear about a “women over 40 show,” they think, “Oh, that might be good … for women over 40.”

The tears and the jaws on the floor are because our show has an entire through-line about battling ageism (think the Savannah Bananas meets the Golden Girls) … while featuring individual acts that are BADASS. Not “…for women over 40.” Period.

I worked on this show for almost a year, counting down to my 50th bday. I like to run a true variety show, where I don’t really repeat acts. I want the audience to walk away thinking about how many things women over 40 can do. So I worked hard to book an array of talent, from Detroit-style skating, to broadway, to Bellydance, to tap, to Bollywood, to pole, to comedy, to music, to burlesque— and of course, hooping.

I also knew the through line I wanted, so my partner, Rollo, helped me create and edit multiple music tracks for the show. I wrote the emcee bits. I ran press. I ran social media. I coordinated the travel for national acts. I built merch that supported the theme. I wore all the hats. I did it while working my writing job.

A few months from the finish line, I hired stage manager Megan Buckley-Ball, who was a great help, along with Rollo. Everyone on and off stage came with A-game talent.

So thank you to the GLORIOUS cast. 😍 You surpassed EVERY dream. So so good!! To my epic crew. To fam, friends, the entire Detroit community who came out to support and have your mind blown. I love you all!

And also, to quote Snoop: “I want to thank me for believing in myself.”

I’m still reeling from last night’s @broadmindedshow review at the magic bag in Ferndale. 💪🏼 🥰 It was an amazing show full of strong, talented and beautiful women all over 40 years old kicking ageism in the butt! The oldest performer was 81 years old and she rocked it! Every performer was outstanding and I was floored by every performance! They were all so inspiring stressing it’s never too late!🩷

Thank you so much @karirevolva , the founder, AMAZING hooper and MC of the show for bringing it to my hometown Detroit! I was so glad I got a chance to experience this and so glad I got to meet you Kari 🩷
