#gratitude @magamnsw MATERIALS WITH A SECOND LIFE ♻️✨ #northerbeachesenvironmentalart&designprize

What possibilities can be found in the materials we discard?

Matthew Curtis’ ‘Revitrification Pair’ transforms waste television screens and architectural glass into new building components. Suzon Fuks’ ‘Helix Nebula’ reimagines obsolete SIM cards as sculptural wearables, while Sacha Jacobsen’s ‘After Grove’ creates a moving canopy from plastic lids diverted from landfill.

Discover how design can transform waste in the Environmental Art & Design Prize at MAG&M, from 7 August to 20 September 2026.

The beginnings of a body of work i am developing titled What We Carry. The work in question considers mirror and glass as agents of perception. Shaped like handbags or weights, the objects reference fashion, value, and the quiet labour of carrying. ‘HUSTLE’ reflects on the surface, framing ambition as something to be worn, borne, and internalised. Embodying the insatiable consumerist desire for more, more work, more money, more goods. The viewer encounters themselves in the mirrored surface, echoing how consumer culture constructs and sells idealised identities. A tool for self-expression entangled with systems monetising insecurity and ethical compromise. The work holds this tension, asking what is carried, at what cost, and for whose benefit.

Curated by Brooke McEachern (@brooke.mceachern), 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘕𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘳 is an off-site exhibition at the SLA Display Village in Whitlam that celebrates local makers and the quiet creative lives unfolding around us.

She explores ways exhibitions can welcome audiences with varied creative, artistic, and gallery literacy, fostering confidence, curiosity, and meaningful public engagement.

𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘕𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘳 is the latest off-site exhibition presented by Belco Arts at the SLA Display Home Villages in Whitlam:

A printmaker, a glass blower, a ceramist, a mark maker and a knifemaker come together in 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘕𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘳, a group exhibition celebrating local makers and the quiet creative lives unfolding around us.

𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘕𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘳 connects objects to the people who made them, foregrounding stories of process, skill, and care embedded in everyday making. The exhibition reflects how creative communities often share knowledge, labour and generosity, slowly building collections within our homes that carry meaning through use.

The artworks in this exhibition are made to be held, used, lived with, and proudly shared with others. In owning any one of these objects, you would be proud to say, "my neighbour made this".

𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘕𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘳 is on display 10am to 4pm, Thursday to Sunday from 13 February until 12 July.
