We are beginning to prepare for our spring piano recitals — the final recitals of the school year before summer begins. 🎹.

Over the next weeks, students from all my schools will be practicing their recital pieces, learning how to perform for an audience, and experiencing the excitement of sharing music with family and friends!

At this age, recitals are about confidence, preparation, concentration, and the joy of playing something independently at the piano.

Looking forward to hearing all the music come together this spring!

Can you guess who is behind the staff?

Having reached the Spring semester at @brooklynfreespace so many of our piano-kids are beginning to read music in the staff.

In our small-group lessons, children learn to recognize notes and connect what they see on the page with what they play on the piano. Music reading becomes a tool for exploration at the piano.

As children gain literacy, they are able to learn new pieces more easily and develop real independence in learning new pieces.

The staffs in these photos were made by the children during lessons. I love how individual they are! 🎹

The kids at BFS are SO ready for their recital on Tuesday! They sometimes help out by filming each other, which has it’s challenges, especially when the photographer suddenly needs to pee! 🥰 Thanks to Max, Alma and Helen for playing, and to Joon, Ramus and Gemma for filming! #NYCPrivatePreschools

To better recognize the keys, we give each letter a color — green C, yellow D, etc. Jesse thinks that’s hilarious and has turned it into a little song! I love it 🥰 So does Alma, who did a great job filming! #NYCPrivatePreschools

It’s always striking to come back to a classroom after the first piano recital for our new 3- and 4-year-olds.

Before the break, they still see themselves as “the new students.” After that first recital, something shifts.

They return with a new confidence — saying things like, “This is what the notes say,” or, “I can show you how to do that.”

Experiencing a recital for the first time changes how children see themselves at the piano. From there, each semester builds on the last. Here, Ethan is playing, and Callum is filming! #NYCPrivatePreschools

Playing duets is an important & fun part of learning piano for the preschoolers. Here, Helen plays & Gemma records! 🥰 #NYCPrivatePreschools #PreschoolEnrichment #EarlyYearsEducation #ArtsInEarlyEducation #PianoEducation IndependentSchoolsNYC NYCPreschools

It’s a new semester, and the newest piano students at @brooklynfreespace Tate, Eason and Phoebe are demonstrating how to find your way around the piano!
In each class, I work with three children at a time for 30 minutes. We begin together, then each child takes a turn at the piano playing a short duet with me, while the others work quietly nearby.
It’s a focused, contained way for preschoolers to learn piano as part of their school day. #NYCPrivatePreschools #PreschoolEnrichment #EarlyYearsEducation #ArtsInEarlyEducation #PianoEducation IndependentSchoolsNYC NYCPreschools
