Next stop on Reggie and Boy’s Stately-Homes-and-Castles-and-Palaces tour was @blenheimpalace, the so-phenomenally-huge-as-to-defy-comprehension country pile of the Dukes of Marlborough. Reggie was intrigued to see it in person for the first time, after knowing of it and becoming familiar with it from books, films, and television. Well, Dear Reader, it didn’t disappoint to say the least. He particularly liked seeing the interiors, art, and furnishings installed using the largesse provided by the Vanderbilts during the 9th Duke’s ill-suited and highly calculated marriage to Consuelo Vanderbilt. Lots of glitter and gold, for sure, but while the marriage shored up the joint and the Marlborough dynasty’s fortunes, noone was the happier for it except, I suppose, their heirs.

While staying in Bath we visited a museum that I’ve been interested in seeing for some time, @americanmuseumandgardens. Founded after WWII by a gay Anglo-American couple, it features the largest collection of American furnishings and decorative arts outside the United States. Situated in Claverton Manor, a handsome Greek Revival mansion designed by Jeffry Wyatville outside Bath, the museum has lovely, well-maintained gardens and a beautiful prospect overlooking the valley of the River Avon. When touring the property Reggie found himself, somewhat to his surprise, rawthuh wishing that the Grade I listed house’s interiors had not been carved up into period room displays of his homeland, as he believed their original layout would have been better-suited to remain a private residence, with the museum’s contents either housed in a purpose-built structure, or — dare he say it — dispersed altogether. He walked through the house wishing to have seen it before it had been altered, or rid of its Americana collection and returned to its original layout. Don’t get me wrong, Dear Reader, he doesn’t object to the collection existing, he just thinks it would be better-housed and better-displayed elsewhere, and the house once-again returned to its original purpose, unencumbered by its extensive collections of Americana.

Reggie and Boy are on a stately home, castle, and palace tour of England, sandwiching a weekend-long wedding of a dear friend in Bath. First stop was @ntbasildonpark, the former home of Lord and Lady Iliffe, now owned and managed by the National Trust. It is a handsome Palladian mansion. With a bit of love and a lot of £££ it would once again be in move-in condition, he thinks. Oh, and yes—a week or more of steady rain would help, too.

Floral Friday on this first day of May. The surprise appearance in the garden of heirloom narcissus Albatross has made this post possible today. I had feared Albatross lost this season (by way of naughty critter shenanigans) but, thankfully, she was just a little slow in blooming. Many years ago, I wrote a blog post on the Reverend George Engleheart (Photo 3) and his influence on my taste in narcissus varieties (Photo 4 shows Albatross on a black and white book plate from my library and the very first Albatross bloom I cultivated). He was featured in a short article in the April 1, 2026 issue of Country Life magazine if you’d care to read it (Photo 5). The talented Reverend and his important contributions and dedication to the world of narcissus cannot be understated. Without his efforts, gardeners around the globe might not be cultivating orange and white daffodils today, including narcissus Albatross, a small-cupped daffodil registered by Rev.
