Tonight's community conversation with Larry Silver was a success! It truly felt like a community event with so many photographers from the local and regional area seated in the audience. Silver's talk covered a wide range of landscape scenes that he photographed from Santa Monica's Muscle Beach to Times Square and even our very own, Compo Beach in Westport. Over seven decades of photographing for ad agencies and for himself, Larry Silver's images evolved from black and white to color, but one thing remained and that was the interaction between a figure and the surrounding landscape. Fond memories of great photographers were shared amongst laughter and awe as the audience discussed inspiration and criticism following Silver's talk. Discussions on the term of being a photographer versus identifying as an artist was a moment that had many pause in consideration—is there a difference and what is the fine line between photography standing on it's own without being labeled as art? This community conversation was part of the Tod Papageorge: At the Beach + In the Pool: On Influence exhibitions on view through October 26, 2025. We have more programming and events lined up for the month of September. • September 18 at 6pm, join us for a conversation with exhibiting and widely celebrated photographer, Tod Papageorge and photographer, educator, and curator, Lisa Kereszi. • September 20 at 6pm, we are celebrating the arts—join us to support MoCA\CT so that we can continue hosting events like the community conversations, concerts, workshops and more. • September 27 at 7pm, Carter Johnson, 2024 Heida Competition winner, will play beautiful music on the piano—the perfect night of unwinding, relaxation and enjoyment. Plan your visit to MoCA\CT located at 19 Newtown Turnpike, Westport CT 06880 on our website, mocact.org. #mocact #fairfieldcounty #arteventsinconnecticut #Photographyexhibition #LarrySilveratMoCACT #artmuseuminconnecticut

Join us 8/6 at 7pm EDT for a deep dive into DAHODIYINII—SACRED PLACES with @dmaceart. Register via the link in our bio. Through visual language steeped in symbolism and resonance, Dakota Mace creates intimate spaces in which the past is not merely recalled but felt—transforming the act of seeing into a shared experience of collective remembrance. DAHODIYINII—SACRED PLACES, Mace’s first solo exhibition in New Mexico, is a poetic meditation on the intricate bonds between people, Land, and memory. DAHODIYINII—SACRED PLACES references one of the most appalling episodes in American history: when the US Army expelled the Diné people from their ancestral homeland, Dinétah, as an act of ethnic cleansing. In what came to be known as the Long Walk, close to 10,000 people were forcibly marched up to 400 miles to the Bosque Redondo in New Mexico, where they were held against their will from 1864 to 1868. Mace maps and chronicles this displacement with care, thoughtfully establishing Land as an active witness, collaborator, document, and material. Mace underscores the profound significance of place, rooted in Ałk’idáá—a Diné concept of balance and generational continuity that literally translates to “experiences of events stacked up through time.” The exhibition unfolds across five galleries in three interwoven threads—Stars, Memory, and Land—each offering a unique lens into Diné cosmology. Stars immerses us in a constellation of ancestors, reflecting an understanding of the universe as a vast and interconnected expanse. Memory unearths deep histories through a living archive. Land is the anchor, bridging the celestial and terrestrial planes. #ArtistTalk #ZoomEvent #VirtualArtistTalk #PhotoInstallation #PhotographyExhibition #PhotoExhibition #DineArt #HumansAndNature #ElementalLife

Join us 8/6 at 7pm EDT for Dahodiyinii - Sacred Places with Dakota Mace (@dmaceart). Dakota Mace (Diné) is an interdisciplinary artist who focuses on translating the language of Diné history and beliefs. Mace received her MA and MFA degrees in Photography and Textile Design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her BFA in Photography from the Institute of American Indian Arts. As a Diné (Navajo) artist, her work draws from the history of her Diné heritage, exploring the themes of family lineage, community, and identity. In addition, her work pushes the viewer's understanding of Diné culture through alternative photography techniques, weaving, beadwork, and papermaking. Register for this free Zoom event via the Kinship website. We hope to see you virtually. #ArtistTalk #VirtualArtistTalk #AltProcess #SiteSantaFe #NewMexicoArt #IndigenousArt #DakotaMace #PhotoGallery #PhotoExhibition

We are looking forward to our 8/6 conversation with Dakota Mace that dives into her first solo exhibition in New Mexico, DAHODIYINII—SACRED PLACES. DAHODIYINII—SACRED PLACES features recurring shades of black, cochineal, and indigo. Site-specific earthen installations, weavings, beadwork, hides, over 1,500 naturally toned cyanotypes, and archival photography are included. Immersive recordings of Diné elders and their children sharing stories position the body as a vessel to carry the weight of history. For many, memories are embedded within the earth, forming an enduring connection between people and place. Mace’s practice is tethered to cycles of creation, dissolution, and renewal, reflecting on the ephemerality of material and the endurance of oral traditions through breath, voice, song, and narrative. We hope you will join us! Register via the Kinship website (link in bio). Image Description: a color vertical photograph of a wall of red, white, and black small rectangular pieces with someone walking in front of the wall. Could you imagine leaving the lucrative world of Wall Street finance to open an art gallery in Chelsea New York and devote your life to photography? @brucesilverstein did exactly that and shares his unique story in the final installment of the podcast collaboration between The Association of International Photography Art Dealers @aipadphoto and @subtextanddiscourse #artworldpodcast. We talk about his upbring and how his father, a photographer, played a huge role in his appreciation of the art form. How his career on Wall Street afforded him the ability to start collecting photography for himself. As well as his ultimate decision to go all in on his passion and become a leading voice in the field. Earlier this year we published eight podcasts with AIPAD members past and present in the lead up to The Photography Show #artfair, which took place from 23rd until 27th of April 2025 at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. We really only scratched the surface of the stories and insights from these incredible people promoting photography in the fine art space. You can already hear the part 2 of my conversation with Bruce Silverstein, where we delve deeper into his evolving gallery vision, his commitment to challenging traditional art hierarchies, and his dedication to championing overlooked artists. Listen to part 1 and part 2 wherever you get your podcasts - link in bio for the major channels.

In part two of our conversation with New York gallerist Bruce Silverstein, we delve deeper into his evolving gallery vision, his commitment to challenging traditional art hierarchies, and his dedication to championing overlooked artists. Bruce reflects on the inaugural exhibition at his new gallery location, Photographer as Sculptor, Sculptor as Photographer, which encapsulates decades of his thought on the fluidity of artistic mediums. He shares insights into how artists like Constantin Brancusi, Henry Moore and Edward Weston have blurred the lines between photography and sculpture, often using the camera as an intrinsic part of their creative process rather than just a documentary tool. The episode also covers Bruce's proactive efforts to address historical biases in the art world, particularly his work with overlooked African-American photographers from the Kamoinge group, such as Chester Higgins, and his promotion of Native American artists like Sarah Sense and Dakota Mace. As well as the innovative approaches of contemporary artists Shinichi Maruyama and Marianne Tuijn, whose works seamlessly blend photography with performance, painting, and sculptural interventions. --- Bruce Silverstein is a leading New York gallerist specialising in modern and contemporary photography. After a successful career on Wall Street, he founded the Bruce Silverstein Gallery in 2001, quickly becoming known for his innovative exhibitions and advocacy for under-represented artists. Bruce’s curatorial approach challenges traditional boundaries, integrating photography with other art forms and re-contextualizing overlooked voices in the art world. This episode of Subtext & Discourse Art World Podcast was recorded on 8. May 2025 between Perth (AU) and New York (US).

Still images, set in motion.
“In Sequence,” now on view Bruce Silverstein Gallery, brings together artists who use visual rhythm to guide how we see and feel. The exhibition explores how sequencing, through rhythm, space, and composition, can shape narrative, build emotion, and shift perception. Visual sequences here structure time, turning the image from a static object into an active force in a story, building tension, resonance, and momentum as the viewer’s eye moves across and beyond the frame. _ Man Ray, L’étoile de mer, 1928
