Ok now we’re well into Hot Girl Summer but here I am finally getting around to posting about my residency @bemiscenter from the beginning of the year. Three months of getting paid to be an artist in the Rare and Well-Done city of Omaha, Nebraska. It was bonkers cool. A gift in the form of beautiful people, wide open space, myriad facilities, AND a free YMCA gym membership! Basically I just cried the whole time (🤔 menty-b), but also got to make things in wood (thanks Big Patrick and MCC), ceramics (thanks Matt), and bronze (thanks Hot Shops)!

One exciting thing is that I started a sprawling and still-evolving project in conversation with the Heartland Gay Rodeo Association Archive (thanks Mark and Peter and all the Gay Rodeo badasses)! In-progress: collecting oral histories, two-stepping, object-making! Future work: a large-scale installation and performance! Omaha! I’ll be back soon!

Being an artist is really great sometimes especially when it’s an invitation to learn to two-step and make weird things and meet new friends and see the Sandhill Crane migration and eat with raccoons and sing karaoke and think about big and small stuff and practice breathing and lift heavy things and shed a few tears.

First week back from Bemis and I’m feeling very unsteady. It’s been a chaotic (unpleasant) past few days, coming back to a reality full of day to day responsibilities. Missing Okada and the sound of the garage door opening.

Can’t wait till we all start missing each other (I already do…unless you don’t then like no I’m cool). Until then
Here’s prt I of Bemis moments.
