POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We broke the safest rule in production design: one location, one look.

Five storylines, different eras and periods, one hospital. The art department worked through every reference from the director and producers, then compiled their own research to get each decade right.

Lesson: references start the conversation, research finishes it.

The plane in After Death is 100% identical to the one that crashed in 1969, down to the tail number.

Dale was flying a Piper Navajo, and Larry Chappell pulled the exact tail number from the accident photos to rebuild that actual aircraft digitally. Nobody in a theater will pause to check. Larry checked anyway.

The details nobody verifies decide whether everything feels true.

We pulled it off.

The crash sequence came together literally at the last minute. Rain rigs, projection, a real semi, two identical cars, a bridge rebuilt from 1989 accident photos: every piece landed later than anyone wanted and exactly when it needed to. Watching the finished sequence, you would never guess.

Last minute is not the same as unprepared. Preparation is what makes the last minute survivable.

The turbulence in After Death was not generated by a computer. It was made by hand.

Grabbing, tossing, a little chaotic movement: we pushed the actors' bodies the way a failing aircraft would. When the frame is tight and the motion is real, your stomach believes it before your brain does.

Chaos reads as real when it costs the performers something real.

We had to recreate a machine that keeps you alive during surgery, and we had no idea what it was.

The heart-lung bypass sat on our list for Pam Reynolds' surgery scene next to a blood transfusion tool and equipment we were still learning the names of. When knowledge ran out, we Face-timed Dr. Karl Greene, who was present during the actual surgery.

A great team doesn't pretend to know. It finds the person who does.

Shoutout to @penny.cr who helped make this happen!

"For safety reasons they had to cut out the engine of the car before we could actually wreck it."

We wanted the crash to be real: two identical cars, one for picture, one to destroy. But practical never means reckless. Before that car could be wrecked, the engine came out entirely. You see half a second of impact. You never see the surgery that made it safe.

The more real you want the danger to look, the less real the danger has to be.

"No, you can't stay. Your mission isn't done. I'm sending you home."

Howard Storm's account runs the full arc: he died, experienced hell, was saved, was taken to heaven, had his questions answered, and then was sent back. Recreating that story on set, you feel the weight of it.

Lesson: some stories do not need dramatizing, they need witnessing.

A soundstage in Baja, Mexico. A rain-slicked driving scene playing across the walls, and not a single road in sight.

We shot the After Death reenactments at Baja Film Studios, built by 20th Century Fox for Titanic and home to Pearl Harbor, Master and Commander, and Tomorrow Never Dies. Projection plates for the driving scenes, a real wreck.

You do not invent movie magic from scratch. You borrow the stage and add your own.

At the Cincinnati Art Museum: paintings, a small crew, and a man reflecting on the experience that changed his life.

We captured B-roll of Howard Storm, author of "My Descent Into Death," walking the galleries. He's a former art professor, so placing him among the art wasn't aesthetic. It was honest.

B-roll is not filler. Done right, it's the film thinking.

Actors can learn lines. Flying a twin engine plane is another matter ✈️

Two other pilots were with Dale that day. Drew played Chuck, @jovo played Gene, and a real pilot on set walked them through what honest cockpit movement looks like. Most viewers will never notice. A pilot in the audience would notice instantly.

Authenticity is cheapest on set and most expensive to fake in post.
