High above the tony streets of Santa Monica, the sound of original music wafted through the salty breeze on Saturday night. The April 4th @sofarsoundsla show played on the rooftop of an apartment complex where a mid-floor studio costs more than $3,500 a month. (Oh, where do I sign a lease? 🤣) Great night for a concert with three great acts. The first of the evening was @brycedrew , whose songs are like listening to Adele having a drink with Alanis Morissette (both are influences Bryce mentioned when I spoke with her after the show), as evidenced by the song That Dress, which you can find on her profile.  Bryce also had one of the most unique merch tables that I've seen at a show in that she also has a line of baked goods that were on offer after her set (see photo in carousel), and by the looks of things, they sold pretty well.  It reminded me of a Trader Joe's cashier I once witnessed chatting up customers as she wrung up their order, and after she bagged their last item, she reached for a nearby flyer she had printed out with her socials on it and said "I'll just put this in your bag too. I have a food channel on YouTube. Check out my videos and leave a comment to let me know what you think." Smart. Online creators have long been known as multi-hyphenates. Why not hawk your YouTube channel at your grocery store day job, or sell your coconut almond macaroon cake at your music gig? (Especially if it's good.) Bryce's "caramel kitchen" Insta is @oopsydaisypralines. (And man, it looks good.) The second band of the evening was @hellolouella , whose sound is a downbeat indie-pop infused with bright, soaring guitar riffs. I talked briefly with lead guitarist CJ Pereira about his sound and he mentioned @mk.gee_ and AC/DC (among others) as an eclectic mix of influences. Lots of Instagramers tagging Louella's song "Headlights" now. It's currently the first song uploaded to his Insta. Check it out to find out why. The final act of the evening was @literallyoyo , who, like Louella and Bryce Drew, can be found playing @thehotelcafe and other coveted venues around town. YoYo's tune "Combat Boots" was a catchy, upbeat R&B track that can be heard on her Insta.

As I attempt to connect with more singer-songwriters, another one I found and would love to give a shoutout to is @brycedrew. Like many of her fellow singer-songwriters, she has faced many obstacles in her life and talks about how important mental health is to her and writes about those experiences in her songs. She has also had experiences related to heartbreak and having been through a heartbreaking friendship breakup myself almost two years ago, I can relate to her songs about heartbreak and as someone with autism, I am also a strong mental health advocate. I’m so happy I found Bryce and I hope to meet her at one of her L.A. shows sometime! Love you so much, Bryce!
