Every Tuesday for the last few years I’ve had the privilege of gathering with this growing bunch of angels to learn to sing in our language, Te Reo Māori. As Takatāpui (Māori LGBTQI+ person) our space has been so necessary for us to foster safe connections to our full authentic selves whilst deepening our matauranga Māori.

This wānanga was dreamt up to keep strengthening our connections to ourselves, each other and Ta moko for our Takatāpui whānau. Grateful to everyone for the awhi and tautoko to make it happen and all the hononga it has and continues to provide.

So much has happened in my little life over the last 36 days… but every day I’ve found myself at some point, thinking about Matua @travis__lovett and what this hīkoi is a call to. Most of my days I’m privileged enough to work on Country and the daily reminder is loud and so obvious it’s impossible to ignore. As most things that go down on this colony it’s baffling to me more people don’t know or aren’t called to learn more, support and show up in more ways. My Communities here in Naarm hold so much hope for me, to all my Takatāpui whānau who guide my waka and keep our tūpuna proud. We need connection more than ever and I see what this hīkoi signifies as a huge gift to do that. Forever grateful to you and this tohu trav, to your whānau, every person big heartedly involved and every single person who’s shared and believed in truth telling as the way forward.

Yesterday on the phone my mum asked me how I got over my body dysmorphia because her friend’s daughter is suffering.

I immediately remembered all of these fucking solid tools that helped me A LOT.

I LOVE my body and some days I don’t. Like every journey it’s not linear — but these are the things that helped me go from hating every inch of me to loving all of the weird and wonderful parts.

🪞 Mirror affirmations. I learnt this from Gerrain Jones. Every morning I would tell myself 10 things I love about my physical body. He mentioned you don’t seek external validation when you give it to yourself and it was a game changer for me. Finding 10 new parts every day was a challenge but it allowed me to send love to my imperfections.

👄 Giving parts I hate a name and sending them compassion as if they were a person — inspired by @bryn.oakly and their crooked toe that we dearly love. You can’t shame something into softness.

💃 Somatic dance and practices that help me focus on how my body feels rather than how it looks, like pole. Somatic dance allowed me to connect to different body parts and release stuck emotions and trauma.

👍 Thanking my body for healing. Appreciating its depths and the wild places it can take me. I feel like such a fucking superhero when I injure myself and then my body heals. How magical that that’s even possible?

These are some of tools we’ll be working with on the 1st of March. A 3 hour journey where we explore these tools properly and build a toolbox you can actually return to when the spiral hits.

And even after all that I still forget, because I’m human. I revisit these when I need to. Having them in your toolbox is a powerful way to combat body dysmorphia.

On the 1st of March we go deeper. Three hours. Real tools. Real embodiment.

It’s hard to express the kupu to explain what walking back to myself feels like most of the time, but finding each other and making spaces to do that for each other has brought me closer to the versions of self I hope for everyone. I am deeply grateful for the brave hearts of my Takatāpui waiata rōpū for gifting me whānau that gifts me the mana to hold open the doors to Te Aō Māori for everyone of us searching…

Finding joy in the faces of the people we love when their worlds are being obliterated. To be seen. Witnessed and held and keep showing up.

The world is seemingly more sick and struggling in every second but Country has taught me that resilience has many faces/fazes/eras/errors so bringing your biggest bravest hearts to all the spaces you walk into can only help to guide us towards a more just future.

The BigBoyBand's first gig was December of 2022! Christmas music!

Fun facts:
1. We had six amazing guest singers that night: @ferryvictoria @phooploop @bryn.oakly @lizapickard @ellasophiemusic @moon.zoe
2. I'm wearing sunglasses because l broke my normal pair a few days prior.
3. I sent my parents a phone recording of the gig and that's all they listened to in their car for over a year.

- Funk/ groove soundscape engineer @bryn.oakly are playing at @baroussou along with newly announced - @oscar_ladell who will be replacing Outtatime. Doors 8pm. FREE entry.

- Toronto four piece @thebeachesband will be bringing a night of rock to @howlermelbourne with themes of sisterhood and 20s turmoil. Supporting them for the night will be @lottegallagher . Doors 7:30pm, tickets $59

- Naarm based rapper and producer @simosoo are launching their new single 'Sweet Dreams' at @nighthawksbar . The rapper mixes hip-hop, club music, city pop and R&B. Supporting for the night will be @fukinoath @dexteeerr_ and @hayleycrymble . Doors 8:15. Tickets $12.

FRIDAY 10

- Head to @miscellania_ to celebrate 10 years of avant, dub, kraut, post-punk act @sound_exek . Helping them celebrate will be @vanessaworm77 and Ill winds. Doors 8pm. Tickets $30.

- It's a double headliner at @fitzroypinnacle . Folk/rock/jazz/electro four piece @leslietheband and Indie/folk-rock/country four piece @lalufeik will be fusing genres on stage with support from @charlottebridie . Doors 8:30. Tickets $12 - $15.

- It will be a night of psychedelia, groove and heavy sounds at @the_catfish_fitzroy as @madoja_ launch their single 'Lonely City Nights'. Joining them for the night will be @el.bebe.band and @rexdanteband . Doors 7:30pm. Tickets $10.

- Rock & roll quartet @the.subordinates are launching their new album 'Lesser Than' at @thelastchancerockandrollbar . They will be supported by alt-punk-country act @foggynotionband and solo act @freyajosephinehollick . Doors 8pm. Tickets $15-$20

- Chicago based R&Be, dance-pop, bliss duo @thedramaduo are hitting the stage of @170.russell . Doors 7:30. Tickets $61.

Kia ora friends, I'm playing my original tunes in Melbourne next Thursday for the first time! So excited, I always love visiting and experiencing the music scene there and it'll be cool to participate in it a little bit too.

The band is @davinojala on bass, @albyrolfe on drums, and @bryn.oakly will hop up for a few tunes too!
