Brownsville and McAllen each have their own strengths, but the future of the Rio Grande Valley is connected. In Episode 14 of Brownsville at Large, I sit down with McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos @mayorjaviervillalobos for a candid conversation about public service, regional cooperation, and some of the major decisions shaping South Texas.

The Brownsville community comes together to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of RJ Mitte.

While millions knew him for his acting role in the TV series Breaking Bad, our community knew him as a person who was generous, kind, and devoted to the local arts, education, and a champion for people with disabilities. As President of The Mitte Foundation, here in Brownsville, RJ played a vital role in developing The Mitte Cultural District and expanding opportunities for our community near and far.

We thank you, RJ, for serving and believing in the people of Brownsville.

I went to celebrate the life of RJ Mitte and met his family. I also met a few nice people that were close to him. They were all very kind to me. The first thing they told me was that RJ would’ve loved the shirt that I was wearing. We did not know each other for years but his kind words meant a lot to me because he was very down to earth. I first met him at comic con with my Spider Jackson costume. After talking to him, I asked him if he was from Brownsville. He told me he wasn’t but his grandpa was. The second time I saw him was while I was working at Main Event. He was enjoying his day at Main Event just like any other guest sitting at the bar and playing games. I will remember him as a kind man. May he rest in peace. 🪦 #rjmitte #rip #spiderjackson #956 #brownsville
