Buffalo Street Trees is an initiative to inform and engage residents of the opportunities and benefits of bringing trees to their neighborhoods
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
With the Bills Season Opener game going on this afternoon, it was the perfect time to go door knocking in South Buffalo, asking neighbors to be apart of an ambitious initiative to replant thousands of street trees over the next four years. (Since moving home in 2017, my neighborhood has lost approximately 300 trees.) I am part of @buffalostreettrees first year cohort of community ambassadors, talking to renters and homeowners about the personal and community benefits of restoring our tree canopy and answering questions about a federally funded push to restore what we've lost. The city's forestry department asked I target South Buffalo's Lockwood Avenue and Trowbridge Street with door canvasing. I knocked on 147 doors, spoke to 39 people and filed tree requests on behalf of three households. That was only Lockwood. I will be canvassing Trowbridge on a different day. After that, I pedaled around South Buffalo tagging newly planted trees with special labels. This all sounds small, but I am proud so far this year, we're observing tree requests have multiplied by more than 4 times across the city and by more than 5 times in priority neighborhoods--typically neighborhoods with a higher poverty rate. #buffalostreettrees #buffalotrees #streettrees #buffalove

“Hello, I’m Your New Tree,” reads the colorful tag soon to be hung on a Cherry tree sapling set for planting on Buffalo’s East Side. The friendly introduction – complete with caretaking instructions and a QR code to learn more about the tree and its benefits – will welcome the latest leafy resident to set its roots in one of the city’s most distressed communities as part of the Buffalo Street Trees initiative.   The City of Buffalo, the UB Regional Institute (UBRI), and its team of community-based planning specialists are setting out to inform Buffalo residents about the opportunities and benefits of bringing trees to their neighborhoods: from fresh air, to shade and cooling, to higher property values, to better mental health.   The campaign focuses on building participation in the city’s 311 “request-a-tree” service, which allows homeowners and renters to request a free tree for the front of their home. The city selects the proper tree species for the site, plants the tree, and provides basic maintenance, with residents pitching in to help water the tree during its fragile first few years.   Wema Kiboino, a graduate of the BA in Environmental Design program and current Master of Architecture student, supports the project’s outreach and website content, from street tree species profiles to best practices in tree care. She says on-the-ground engagement in the community is a direct application of her education. “My academic training in these fields emphasizes the value of participatory design as an approach that invites community members to play an active role in shaping their environment. The interactions we have with residents provide valuable insight into their perceptions, aspirations for their communities, and perspectives on this initiative, which then inform our approach. Ultimately, the Buffalo Street Trees project reinforces the role of community participation in successful urban and environmental initiatives.”   Visit the link in our profile to learn more or get involved.   #UBuffalo #UBuffaloArchPlan Tree tag

THANK YOU for joining us for another MAP Seedling Sale this year! 🌼✨ Seeing our community gather on the farm each year reflects the heart of MAP — we strive to be a place where communal wellbeing, belonging and resilience can be cultivated through a commitment to justice. With the help of our community partners, we achieved just that! Together, we learned about the benefits of eating locally grown food, 🍅 connected with local growers, 🌱 tested attendee soil samples for lead to promote safe growing, 🐛 learned from composting demos, shared neighborhood resources, and sold SO many plants… around 4,000 MAP-grown seedlings went home with you! Thanks to the partners, vendors and volunteers who made it happen. We hope you’ll come back for another seasonal event on the farm! Mark your calendars for the Buffalo Bills Foundation @slowrollbuffalo ride hosted at MAP on June 1st. 🚲

Many neighborhoods across Buffalo have experienced decades of limited tree canopy coverage, leading to hotter streets, poorer air quality, fewer shaded public spaces, and reduced environmental investment in historically underserved communities. 🌍 Through the @beliefguardianfoundation Youth Guardian Program partnership with @buffalostreettrees and collaboration with the City of Buffalo, we are working hand in hand with youth and local government to help address these disparities one tree at a time.🏡 Our young leaders are not only learning how to plant and care for trees, they are learning civic engagement, environmental stewardship, teamwork, leadership, and how community change happens through action. Special thank you to @mayorseanryan for supporting efforts focused on expanding tree equity and environmental investment throughout Buffalo neighborhoods. As the Mayor said in the video: “Request a tree.” 🌱 This initiative represents what real collaboration looks like: 🤝 Youth + Government 🌱 Education + Service 🏙️ Community + Environmental Justice We encourage residents to become part of the movement! 🌳 www.buffalotrees.org Together, we can help create a greener, healthier, and more equitable Buffalo for future generations. #YouthGuardianProgram #BuffaloStreetTrees #CityOfBuffalo #EnvironmentalJustice #treeequity

In honor of Arbor Day, tree care companies have been volunteering their time, equipment and talent over the past 25 years, making this the longest-running Arbor Day event of its kind in New York State! Experts help with a wide range of tree care work, from maintenance to hazardous removal! Our forestry manager Mike Sawyer also coordinated a Tree Expo in partnership with @NYSDEC, @NYSArborists and @NYSUFC. Special Thanks to the following companies who joined us - we are grateful, and so are our trees! @AltecInc | @BobCatofBuffalo | @BradleyTreeNY | @BaschmannServices | @CCECornell | @TreeCareOfNewYork | Schichtels Nursery | Boston Hill Nursery | @NYSDEC ReLeaf | @NYSArborists | @IBEW_Local_41 (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) | @ErieCountyParks Forestry Department | @BuffaloStreetTrees | @Ecos_Cooperative_Inc Spectacular moments captured by @KellyKazPhoto

When Frederick Law Olmsted laid out his vision for the City of Buffalo in 1868, he wanted to create a "city in a park." Over the years, the City cut down more trees than they planted. Too often, neighborhoods that needed them most were left behind. Today, many parts of Buffalo don’t have the canopy they once did. Together, we can start to fix that. If you live in the City of Buffalo on a street that’s missing trees, you can call 📞 311 and request to have one planted for free. It’s that simple. If you get a tree, our City crews will handle basic maintenance for the first few years to make sure the tree is happy and healthy. This Arbor Day, request a tree and help us build a better, greener Buffalo.

Those who sow in righteousness will reap a sure reward.” – Proverbs 11:18 There’s something powerful about stewardship not just of land, but of people, neighborhoods, and the responsibility to build where others may have overlooked. This past month, I had the opportunity to complete the Buffalo Street Tree Ambassador Training Program, an initiative led by the City of Buffalo in partnership with the University at Buffalo Regional Institute, where I was selected as 1 of 12 ambassadors across the city. This work speaks directly to inequities we’ve seen across Buffalo, especially on the East and West Sides where tree canopy has historically been lacking. Through a CPTED lens, tree planting is more than beautification it’s a strategy that strengthens natural surveillance, activates spaces, reduces crime, and restores pride within communities. Grateful to everyone who poured into this experience, including the team at Monarch and all of the leaders and educators who helped shape this journey. This is just the beginning. Looking forward to putting this work into action across the city. #Buffalo #CommunityDevelopment #UrbanForestry #CPTED #FaithInAction
