The importance of socialization - but what is socialization?

Dogs are social creatures, yes, but they're also (wo)man's best friend for a reason! One question we're hearing a lot of from our clients is, "how do I socialize my puppy?" This is such a loaded question, that it'd probably take me over an hour to really explain my thoughts on it, but I'll try to break it down into a few pieces.

First thing first: build a relationship with your dog. He or she lives with you, is your bff, and would literally do anything for you. If you have multiple dogs in your house, spend individual 1:1 time with all your dogs. Work on engagement skills with you'd dog or puppy and really build that bond and trust.

Now that's covered, go out and explore! Start with someplace easy, then build up the difficulty. Explore lakes, rivers, beaches, and the woods with your dog! Hang out and go "people watching" with you dog. You'll be surprised how many people come by with beards, hats, sunglasses, and all sorts of looks to expose your dog to, but not everyone needs to stop and say hi. Take the time to read your dog, see how comfortable they are and adapt your training.

Got friends with dogs who display behaviors you like? Supervised puppy playdates are great! Go for walks, explore, and have fun with your doggie friends! See other dogs from across the street while on your walk? Have your puppy acknowledge their existence, but continue training and working with them. You guys won't necessarily need to say hi to EVERY dog on a walk.

We suggest this way of socialization to almost all our clients. There is always an exception to how everyone does this so it's not an end all situation. Just look at the dog in front of you, listen to them and see what you need to work on - just don't forget to have fun!
