“A nation can’t build ships with spreadsheets.”

That was the message David Hebert, Vice President of Business Development at The Entwistle Company, shared with the latest welding graduates from the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program at IALR.

Located just over two miles from IALR in Danville, Entwistle manufactures complex systems installed on ships and submarines across the U.S. Navy fleet. The company employs program graduates.

David knows firsthand how difficult it can be to find skilled welders. He also knows just how important their work is.

“You’ve chosen a profession that matters,” he told the 27 graduating welders.

In just 16 weeks, those graduates earned 285 welding qualifications across four major welding processes. Approximately 92% of them had already received employment offers or were progressing through the hiring process by graduation day.

Those results reflect why employers across the country continue looking to ATDM for skilled talent.

“You’re entering a field that desperately needs your skills, values your craftsmanship and offers a pathway to long-term careers,” David said. “Employers across the nation are competing to bring you onto their teams.”

Technology, automation and artificial intelligence will continue changing manufacturing. But ultimately, somebody still has to build the ships, submarines, infrastructure and defense systems that keep the country moving and secure.

That work depends on skilled tradespeople like ATDM graduates.

“Every defense system that keeps us safe relies on the skill and precision of welders," David said.
