I've spent many hours gazing up, flying around and spending time within this monumental building. It's definitely getting close to the finish line as the facade installation approaches completion.

In this video we see the gaps left by the external elevators being filled, and the top level facade panels being lifted by tower crane along with the installation team. These guys have nerves of steel!

6 workers arrived on site. Not one could start working. 🚧

The expensive mistake happened BEFORE they arrived.

Imagine paying an installation crew to stand around waiting.

Not because they're lazy.

Not because they arrived late.

But because:

❌ The latest drawings weren't approved.

❌ Materials hadn't arrived.

❌ Another contractor hadn't finished their work.

❌ Nobody confirmed the site was ready.

Now the supervisor is making calls, the project manager is chasing updates, and six people are waiting for instructions.

Meanwhile, labour costs keep running.

Here's the uncomfortable truth:

A crew arriving on time doesn't mean a project is ready.

Before sending workers to site, every construction team should confirm five things:

✅ Approved drawings

✅ Materials delivered and checked

✅ Installation area accessible

✅ Preceding trades completed

✅ Formal approval to mobilize

Because tracking installation progress is important.

But confirming installation readiness is what helps prevent wasted site visits in the first place.

The most expensive delay isn't always a broken machine or a missing worker.

Sometimes, it's six people waiting for one decision.

💾 Save this checklist for your next project.

🔁 Share it with a construction manager who needs to see it.

Construction professionals: What's the most frustrating reason you've seen a crew unable to start work?

Atlassian - October 4.

Down she comes! Sunday, October 4 saw the dismantling and lowering of the centre crane of Atlassian Central. The main boom consists of 5 separate sections. Once disassembled, each section required it's own semi trailer to transport off site.

Considering the weather over the past few days, I imagine a few people were a bit anxious! Thankfully it was a perfect Spring day.

One of the World’s Tallest Student Tower’s currently underway in Melbourne!

@rmituniversity and @scapeau are investing more than $270 million into State Library Exchange, a major mixed-use tower rising directly above Melbourne’s new State Library Metro Tunnel station.

Designed by @hassell_studio and being delivered by @built.construction the 185.4 metre tower will combine nine levels of teaching and research space with 46 levels of student accommodation for around 1,420 students. Once complete, it is expected to become the world’s tallest purpose-built student accommodation tower.

Construction started in June, with completion targeted for 2029. The project also represents a major commitment from RMIT University, which has signed a $190 million, 15-year lease for the education component.

Sitting at the intersection of Swanston Street and the new Metro Tunnel, this is a pretty unique combination of education, student housing and transport infrastructure in one vertical precinct.

Earlier this year I visited Oriel's Moorebank facility to capture some footage of the timber elements being prepared for shipment to Atlassian Central.

There's been a lot of interest in the mass timber habitats within Atlassian Central, and from ground level it's difficult to see the sheer volume of timber within the building. The timber you see in this video is for the final 2 habitats (6 and 7). Multiply what you see by 2.5 and you'll get a good idea of the scale.

Below information c/o Oriel building Services
-------------------------------------------

In this video you’re seeing the mass timber elements for Atlassian Central, Habitats 6 and 7 - which have now been successfully shipped to site and installed.

Oriel Building Services was awarded the contract to construct the tower's seven mass timber habitats. Since placing the first timber column on May 20, 2025, our team recently reached a major milestone: placing the final flooring panel and completing the primary structural assembly.

At the heart of this visionary project is an innovative hybrid structure combining mass timber with a steel diagrid. By prioritising timber, the project is targeting a ~50% reduction in upfront embodied carbon compared to a conventional premium office tower.

Rising in the heart of Sydney, Atlassian Central, co-owned by Dexus and Atlassian, is now officially the world’s tallest hybrid timber tower - an international milestone helped by WIEHAG Timber Construction’s timber engineering expertise and Oriel Building Services’ specialised timber construction capabilities.

Project Statistics by the Numbers:

📦 Total Timber Volume: 11,582.62 m³

🧱 Individual Timber Elements: 5,640

🏋️ Heaviest Single Element: 2 tonnes

Atlassian Central is being delivered by Built, in joint venture with Obayashi Corporation.
