We are proud to announce “Form, Shadow, Motion: Selections from the Burger Collection, Hong Kong,” opening next week on Friday, October 23. Continuing The Drawing Center’s tradition of exhibitions drawn from notable private collections, curator Olivia Shao has selected approximately fifty works on paper from the Burger Collection's expansive holdings of more than 1,000 works on paper to construct a focused visual essay on shared historical, poetic, and philosophical concerns, with Hong Kong and New York as twin points of reference and Eastern thought and Western philosophy as its guiding frameworks.

Join us for a public reception on Thursday, October 22, from 6–8pm to celebrate the opening of the exhibition. Featuring 38 artists from around the globe, “Form, Shadow, Motion” will occupy the entirety of The Drawing Center’s gallery space before traveling in an expanded format to Asia Society, Hong Kong in 2027.

Michael Armitage, Personal Thoughts (Asshole), 2022, oil on Lubugo bark cloth

In this painting on Lubugo bark cloth with its rough texture and irregular gaps, Armitage pays homage to Kenyan mythology and the landscape of his homeland. The scene takes inspiration from the epic novel The Perfect Nine (2020) by the late Kenyan author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o (1928-2025) who chronicles the founding of Kenya’s Gĩkũyũ people and the ideals of beauty, courage and unity. Thiong’o’s story blends folklore, mythology and allegory, and was a key inspiration for Armitage’s 2021–22 body of work featured in his celebrated solo exhibition ‘You, Who Are Still Alive’ @kunsthallebasel

About his formation as a painter, Armitage has said that “what is most important is that I’ve never felt a sense of hierarchy. I think it’s very easy within the history of art to feel a cultural hierarchy, and not having that is liberating. To take artists and work at face value – and learn about it afterwards – leaves a lot of space to be affected by things. I appreciate not having grown up being told: “These are the greatest things ever made and these are the greatest people who ever made them.” (Interview with Juliet Rix for Studio International, June 2021)

A comprehensive survey of Armitage’s paintings and drawings entitled “The Promise of Change” curated by Jean-Marie Gallais @jmg.jmg is currently on view @palazzo_grassi Pinault Collection (through January 2027).

As Germany celebrates the reunification today on its national holiday, the museum Hamburger Bahnhof brings the history of a once-divided Berlin back into focus. For decades, the border between East and West ran directly past the building, dividing the city and separating families and friends.

Now, Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart is one of the most significant institutions for contemporary art, committed to cultural freedom and dialogue across different histories and perspectives. In an increasingly polarized world, this former site of division stands for tolerance and exchange — a sign of hope.

More on Hamburger Bahnhof and its work amid the complexities of our time in T - The New York Times Style Magazine Germany, 01/26.

Thank you @tmagazinegermany @konstantinkonstant @madamewinter.

Simone Fattal, Man in the Desert, 2000, glazed stoneware, is currently on loan to @museedartmodernedeparis for the artist’s survey exhibition «Des villes au fond d’un lac» bringing together some one hundred works and covering fifty years of Fattal’s practice, from early landscape paintings to ceramics and collages (on view through January 2027).

Man in the desert is a later example of Fattal’s ceramics, a medium the artist began exploring in 1988 after taking classes at the College of Marin and the San Francisco Art Institute. Out of clay emerged archaic anthropomorphic or animal figures that drew inspiration from the epics of the Mediterranean basin, especially Mesopotamia or Ancient Greece, from the Epic of Gilgamesh to Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Simone Fattal is a Lebanese American artist born in Damascus, Syria, in 1942 and based in Paris.

Still thinking back to “A Night in Berlin”, Hamburger Bahnhof’s 30th anniversary gala, an evening that has stayed with me.

Especially grateful to dear Christine Wuerfel-Stauss @christine_ws_, one of the Gala Chairs, for her gracious invitation and for sharing so much of Hamburger Bahnhof’s world with me. 🤍 Warm thanks also to Gala Chair Monique Burger @burgermonique, and to directors Sam Bardaouil @sbardaouil and Till Fellrath @till.fellrath, whose leadership continues to make the museum such a singular institution.

From Alice Sara Ott performing Ryuichi Sakamoto to Cate Blanchett’s speech, it was a memorable celebration of Hamburger Bahnhof @hamburger_bahnhof and its future.

I wrote about the gala for @whitewall.art: “A Night in Berlin: The Gala That Reimagined the Hamburger Bahnhof”. Link in bio.

Thank you so much to all the brilliant minds who went above and beyond to contribute to Hamburger Bahnhof‘s inaugural gala, especially to Monica Bonvincini for her glowing light-based intervention, to Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset for transforming the gala night into a large-scale performance piece, to Alice Sara Ott for her otherworldly piano solo which moved many to tears, to the Berliner Symphoniker and the Staatsoper unter den Linden, and to Ellen Allien for creating a most captivating sonic space so emblematic of Berlin.

For the first time, the museum presented four awards to honor and support outstanding contributions to contemporary art. My most sincere congratulations to Mona Hatoum on receiving the Lifetime achievement award in recognition of her globally influential body of work, to @kiran_nadar on the Global Arts Patronage Award for her unparalleled support of artistic communities and to the @delfinafdn on receiving the Changemaker Award for its longstanding residency programs fostering artistic exchange. The Hamburger Bahnhof Studio Awards for artists under 35 were awarded to @kircherabdul, @monilola and Jonas Roßmeißl for their practices exploring identity within social structures. A special thank you to Frances Morris, Glenn Lowry, @fusuneczacibasi, @katharina_grosse, @ayoung___kim and Gabriele Knapstein for presenting the awards.
Alongside celebrating the award recipients, I would like to thank our extraordinary co-hosts for lending their eminent voices and support to this night: Edward Berger, Cate Blanchett, @mattdillon, @ninahoss_actress, Thomas Ostermeier, @wimwenders33, @studiomonicabonvicini, @markbradfordart, @elmgreenanddragsetstudio , @anne_imhof, @wolfgang_tillmans, @_kerstinweng, @ellen.allien, Jörg & Maria Koch @032c, Christa Bösch & Cosima Gadient @ottolinger, @carlasozzani, Tricia Tuttle, A. Zietzschmann and E. Sobotka.

And finally, my profound gratitude goes to Aita Sulser, the invaluable force behind the scenes, Mathilda Legemah, Elena Montini - and so many of my brilliant friends whose support has meant so much.
One year of joining forces for culture as a space of freedom, diversity and exchange.🤍 @hamburger_bahnhof

30 years of Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart ~
2026 marks three decades since the museum opened its doors for the first time in 1996 as a home for a plurality of cultures and personal histories, embracing the diversity of the world we live in. Fundamentally interwoven with Germany’s history of division Hamburger Bahnhof became synonymous with cultural freedom and discursive exchange. Its continuous evolution over three decades established the museum as one of the most forward-looking, rigorous and defining institutions for contemporary art in the world today.

In celebration of this pivotal anniversary the museum brought together 500 guests from across art, music, film, fashion, philanthropy and public life for ‚A Night in Berlin‘, Hamburger Bahnhof‘s inaugural gala to reimagine what a public institution can be and how its path forward will be shaped. What became one of the most fulminant, glamorous evenings imaginable for the art world unfolded its true impact way beyond this evening: a global community of friends and supporters formed to accompany the museum as it moves forward, helping to protect the freedom of its artistic direction and enabling the most courageous, inclusive projects.

It was my greatest honor to work alongside @burgermonique @sbardaouil and @till.fellrath bringing this vision to life and to co-chair this evening. Their ability to rethink how inclusive and welcoming a museum can be and their unwavering dedication to the future of independent cultural institutions is deeply inspiring. In a time marked by violence and intolerance the capacity of art to sustain our shared humanity becomes more vital than ever, it offers hope to all of us.
Onwards from here.
