Days like yesterday remind me why I love my job as an artist. I’m still buzzing after all the conversations, encounters and discoveries of new artworks and art practices across the two events — the VAI Get Together and the opening of Technologies of Peace at IMMA.

The VAI Get Together @visualartistsireland at TU Dublin was a brilliant opportunity to catch up with artists and curators, to meet new people and catch up with friends I hadn’t seen in ages.

The keynote by Claire Fontaine was particularly interesting, and I also really enjoyed the Re-establishing Your Art Practice panel with Diaa Lagan, Vivienne Griffin and others. I’m sorry I didn’t get any photos of the talks, I was too busy listening!
It was also brilliant to come across artists’ work I hadn’t encountered before, and to have those chance conversations that are often the most valuable part of these events.
Then over to IMMA @immaireland for the preview of Technologies of Peace: Art and Transition in Contemporary Europe (1989–2026). (IMMA)
There was so much to take in, but three artists whose work really stayed with me were Petrit Halilaj, Ursula Burke and Emily McFarland.
I was struck by the way the exhibition approaches peace as something that has to be continually negotiated, maintained and imagined. I think Rita Duffy put it well when she said something like an artists role is to ‘reimagine futures’ and her story about the happy journey ‘for a change’ on a British army helicopter to inspect an army checkpoint after the Good Friday agreement was fascinating.
A long day, lots of new work to think about, and some really good conversations. Exactly the sort of day that reminds me why being part of an artistic community matters.

some wee bits and pieces from a project during semester 2 of illustration at the start of this year - work exhibited in @the_linen_hall endeavouring towards ending violence against women and girls in Northern Ireland.
The final riso print, titled "Head on my Shoulders but Nobody's Home", depicts an everyday experience of showing up and keeping ones self together, shown through the braiding of the hair. The wilting sunflower of the interior self illustrates the seemingly irreversible destruction and disarray of one's life in such a situation, the perfect, mathematical order of its seeds losing their structure. The embroidered typography ironically mimics crafts and decoration often found in seemingly happy homes and households.

Ursula Burke's Blue Sphinx Winged (2021) is one of the works on display as part of our current exhibition, Panorama Europa.

The form of @burke.ursula's Blue Sphinx is inspired by the French Mannerist sphinx, a significant decorative element in royal palaces and gardens across Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Typically adorned in garments and decorative elements, these sculptures were sometimes used to represent the enigmatic nature of powerful women in the French court. However, the artist also draws upon the classical mythology of this creature as a guard who poses riddles to those wishing to enter the city of Thebes, with death a certainty if answered incorrectly. In Burke’s hands, this figure becomes less a symbol of ornament or authority and more a troubled and unstable guardian, its wounded porcelain surface suggesting a body marked by violence rather than permanence.

Blue Sphinx Winged draws upon tropes of pan-European visual language in the use of classical mythology, Renaissance painting, and aristocratic decorative sculpture. Burke bends the traditional association of European art history as that of harmony, instead offering it as a structure through which histories of conflict and power are both concealed and revealed.

Explore Burke's work and more in our gallery spaces, we are open Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 5pm.
