POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In November 2017, The Playground was just beginning.

These photographs were taken at our very first session by photographer Elliott Franks, who sadly is no longer with us 🕊️

Founder Simone @ms_stackhouse still remember Elliott looking at her during that very first Playground when moving from space to space to capture it all and saying, “This is bonkers.” ❤️

And we think he was right. There was something a little bonkers about it, a room full of artists coming together to experiment, create, take risks and play, with no real idea of what The Playground might become.

It’s special to be able look back at these, before we could ever have known how many artists would pass through the doors, how many connections would be made, or how many moments of creativity and play would follow.

We feel incredibly lucky to have these photographs and that Elliott was there to document that first chapter of our story, and we will be forever grateful.

Thank you, Elliott, for capturing the beginning and for being part of it. May you rest in peace.
Elliott will always be part of The Playground’s history❤️

Furnitures for an Absent Body (2026)
A 3 channels sound and moving-image installation
Artist: Li Yilei
Performer: Kirill Burlov @burlovdance
Installation support: Astra HuiMeng Wang @strictlyfictional
Venue: @djerassiprogram
Curator: @yiyang____ (Unfolding Grounds) @mushiwooseongjames

“Furniture for an Absent Body works from a distance, thinking through how a body that cannot physically arrive might still enter a space through movement, through attention, through a kind of shared imagination.

At its centre are ten questions, written by Li Yilei and handed to artist and choreographer Kirill Burlov as prompts for improvisation. They don’t prescribe choreography so much as set up situations around restriction, support, fear, attachment, memory, love, the experience of being watched. Burlov moves among a group of chairs in response, and each question takes shape through hesitation, weight, proximity, resistance, stillness, the small decisions a body makes.

The resulting videos sit among the existing furniture of the Djerassi space. The same ten questions are handed to the audience too, as they move through the room, watch the recorded body, and sit among the chairs themselves. In this way the questions travel from one body to the next, from artist to dancer to viewer.

The work doesn’t ask the audience to repeat what they see. Instead, it invites them to sit with the same questions in their own way. A chair might become a place of support, of avoidance, of waiting, of memory or just a chair again. Through this shared score, bodies separated by geography and circumstance find themselves briefly occupying the same perceptual space.

Arrival, here, isn’t the physical transfer of a body from one place to another, it’s something more
relational. Artist, performer, and audience never meet directly. They arrive in each other instead, through the questions, through watching, through the ordinary gestures of approaching, sitting, staying and leaving.”

between membranes
Unfolding Grounds × Djerassi
Sunday, August 16 // 11:00 AM

Join us this Sunday for between membranes, a guided art hike presented by Unfolding Grounds at Djerassi.

Moving through Djerassi’s landscape, between membranes explores the subtle thresholds between human presence and the natural world through site-specific sound, performance, food, and nature.

Featuring artists Li Yilei with Kirill Burlov, Aine Nakamura, Alex H Nichols, Jorge Bachmann, and blurness (Barbara Nerness), curated by yi yang and Mushi Wooseong James.

The experience is deeply participatory. Guests are encouraged to bring a camera or recording device to document the day, with photographs and reflections later brought together in a collective artist book as a shared archive of the experience.

Registration is free and space is limited - visit the link in our bio!

Presented by Unfolding Grounds in collaboration with Djerassi Resident Artists Program.

A few of my favourite moments I was able to capture last year at the London Design Festival Drawing Performance Project workshop @drawingperformanceproject at @klatchstudio led by @lucyalgar_ @burlovdance with technology and lighting by @vitakcrete

a big thank you to@lucyalgar_ for allowing me to capture the workshop and to the crew, and all the participants for exploring and playing so freely; it was a joy to capture.

2016

2016 was the year that @burlovdance & I started working together & the beginnings of @drawingperformanceproject were born. I had taught drawing & performance design in different contexts, primarily in HE institutions, for years but 2016 was the year that I gained funding from the @wimbledonual @unioftheartslondon teaching & learning fund & things really took off.

These images show a workshop where Kirill & I are sharing the process we used for his performance, with pianist @pianist_zarins of The Seasons by Peteris Vasks

I drew as he danced & my drawings were projected directly on to his body & the stage thereby enabling the audience to witness the connections between drawing & movement instantly.

A moment to reflect upon and celebrate the fantastic @drawingperformanceproject day we shared @klatchstudio for @parkroyaldesigndistrict @l_d_f_official on 13.9.25.

Making dynamic, safe & inspiring spaces & places where participants can share their creativity with others is such a joy & privilege. Exploring movement through drawing allows all sorts of understandings to emerge….especially about letting the process bring forth unexpected performance design solutions.

Thank you to all who particpated, performed & made that wonderfully full & imaginative day happen. Looking forward to facilitating more adventures in 2026.

Special thanks to @charmaine__nicole @charchardances for these beautiful photos
