— Yvonne Rainer flagrantly dazzling in the single most shocking moment in her cancer-and-white-people masterpiece, “Privilege”, 1990. I remember seeing this film when it came out, at Film Forum on Watts Street, with Tom Burr and Ull Hohn, great surgical friends of those days, and ideal (de-idealizing, natch) partners in spectatorship. We were à la Craig Owens men in feminism. One year Ull and I had a shared birthday party at the Brooklyn apartment he shared with Tom, and people I knew actually came! Mayer Rus came, and the great Sarah Pettit, too. I can’t remember why but Sarah had a fit on the platform of the F or whatever’s platform and she *sat the fuck down* in protest. Lezzie tantrums? I am so there. Sarah Pettit was an original editor of Out magazine and its how shall I say, shocking precursor, the genius rag Outweek. Where or where is my very special review of Donald Frame’s book on Andrew Crispo, “Bag of Toys”? Titles really sometimes are everything.

Counterpublic 2026: Coyote Time Curatorial Ensemble Bravo! This exhibition would not be possible without the Counterpublic 2026 Curatorial Ensemble: Wanda Nanibush, Stefanie Hessler, Jordan Carter, Nora N. Khan, and Raphael Fonseca. From the curatorial statement: “The term ‘coyote time’ comes from platform video games and marks the moment when a character leaps off a cliff yet remains temporarily suspended in midair. In this hang time, the player can make one of three decisions: jump back to the ledge, do nothing and accept the risk of falling, or move forward and trust that another platform will propel them to the next level. Designers created coyote time to write forgiveness into their systems’ physics. This mechanic grants players a respite during which they can recalibrate to strategize their next move. Good systems hold their own rules lightly. Poor systems are rigid and inflexible. In this social, political, and ecological moment, we must engineer coyote time ourselves. “Counterpublic 2026: Coyote Time draws from the eponymous title of Alice Bucknell’s commission for this edition of the triennial, which presents fifty new commissions alongside a selection of historical recontextualizations in sites across St. Louis, stretching from north to south, east toward the Mississippi, and across the river to Sauget, Illinois. Our edition proposes coyote time as both a curatorial methodology and a way of existing in the world: jumping before the next platform has fully materialized. We approach the exhibition with compositional devices set in canny coyote time—scores, notation, staging—all forms of preparatory, anticipatory work.” Read the full statement via the link in our bio. @jordancartercarter @raphaphon @steffihessler @prometheanwatch @criticalnish

Opening today in St. Louis, Missouri | Tom Burr in Counterpublic 2026: Coyote Time Roses continues Tom Burr’s long engagement with parkscapes, garden constructions, and reconfigured architecture. The work takes the form of two inverted, misaligned right angles made of chain-link fencing. Rose-tinted safety and surveillance mirrors, along with chairs, are attached to the fencing. Park-inspired signage connects historical figures and public regulations. For Burr, the rose functions as both a material metaphor and a historical reference. He draws from the life of Rose Williams, the sister of playwright Tennessee Williams, whose institutionalization affected Williams greatly. Burr places Rose within a lineage of queer figures who stand in for voice, presence, and resistance. Burr will be participating in a talk with curator Jordan Carter (@jordancartercarter) on the occasion of the triennial, taking place today at 6pm at the Grandel Lots. Hoje o auroras completa 10 anos!

This week, our John R. & Barbara Robinson Family Director, Kate McNamara, recommends: Tom Burr: Torrington Project, edited by Blake Oetting. Tom Burr: Torrington Project documents the artist's three-year occupation of a repurposed nineteenth-century factory in Torrington, Connecticut, where Burr transformed the building into a "living archive"—part studio, part exhibition, part gathering space. Bringing together more than ninety works spanning his career alongside performances, conversations, and collaborations with fellow artists, the project challenged conventional distinctions between art and architecture, exhibition and production, memory and making. Richly illustrated with photographs, archival materials, and newly commissioned essays, the publication extends the life of the project beyond its physical site. "Tom Burr has long been an artist whose work I return to for the way it thoughtfully weaves together architecture, institutional critique, queer histories, and lived experience. What I love most about Torrington Project is that it isn't simply a publication documenting an exhibition—it becomes an extension of the project itself, asking how artworks continue to evolve through place, community, and time. It's especially meaningful to see an essay by our own David Joselit, art historian and Chair of Harvard's Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies, whose writing offers another thoughtful entry point into Burr's expansive practice." — Kate McNamara Browse Kate's selection, along with hundreds of artist books and publications from Primary Information, during Salad Days at the Carpenter Center. Salad Days: Primary Information is on view through August 16. Open Thursday–Sunday, 12–5pm
