POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

BURNING VERMILLION- I had barely stepped into my 20's when I found my prince charming and was ready to get hitched. That afternoon it was by chance that I picked up the 2nd phone & overheard a conversation that I will never forget in this life.

My father was talking with my would-be father-in-law and had just asked very polietly- "What are your demands?" The question itself shocked me to the core...I could feel my ears burn...tears welled up in my eyes. I had never seen my hero so helpless. Why did he have to ask this question? I had made myself so clear- I won't marry anyone whose family demands a dowry. I considered any such demands as an insult to my family, me and the very institution of marriage. I didn't care for stupid customs then or now. Dowry was a deal breaker for me...period.

Within those brief few seconds I was both angry at my father and sad for him. Then the voice on other end boomed- "What are you saying? No, we don't want anything." In that instance I knew I'm marrying into a family where I am getting another father.

Every time I hear of a dowry death my blood boils. I am transported to that afternoon conversation between my father and father-in-law. The answer could have just as easily been different from the other side of the phone. Maybe despite my protests I would have been married. Because everytime there is a justification like perhaps in the case of Twisha Sharma or Deepika Nagar- because the proposal is so good, the boy is so great, the family is so reputed or maybe because boy & girl are seemingly in love.

Why do we not take a hint- a God sent sign-to say NO when a dowry demand comes in? Why is it so important to be married and stay married despite abuse? Isn’t life & dignity of living the most important thing? My heart goes out to the families of the girls who fall prey to Greed. Demonic greed of people who want to suck money from a girl's family and degrade this sacred institution.

I made a commitment to find atleast an hour to indulge & infuse myself with some soul energy. A daily dose of happiness. And art truly heals & gives joy. So here I am depicting a traditional Rajasthani art form in my lastest canvas- a bottle.

I named this SUKOON (Peace/Serenity)

Painting on a bottle isn't easy when using acrylic color and brush. But I had to pick up my brush again. Nothing elaborate. No big commitments. Just a simple bottle art. Born out of the need to relive the joy that sits with me in these moments when I am the creator again. When I have full control over things. When I don't even have to worry for any slips or mess. Because everything can be erased, recreated. Even when the brush makes an erratic stroke there is no fear of the consequences of the outcome. The paint scrubs off easily. Yes making smooth lines, hues, textures, detailing isn't easy. But still it's therapeutic- calming. Try it sometime.

I celebrated this Dhanteeras by creating this golden, black, white & red Koi Fish textured acrylic painting. I love playing with textured surfaces- getting the abstract and real elements to clash. Their marriage brings about unforseen, unpredictable and yet beautiful surprises. It's never easy to manoeuvre the brush strokes along uneven textured surfaces. Yet those bumps and irregular events on the canvas birth the most unique effects. Much like in life, those curves, bumps and laborious strokes birth unintended rare outcomes which cannot be created by following predictable set patterns.
