How do we move through the spaces we call home?

For artist Cat Jones, placing miniature cameras throughout his house offered a more raw way to observe his own movements and relationship to space, capturing something less curated and more instinctive.

We are so excited for the opening of our “TRANSITIONS” exhibition on Saturday, October 24th.

We are also honored to have multidisciplinary extraordinaire, Cat Jones, perform for us during the opening night.

`My performance centers transitions in the literal sense. We are forever in a transition. I start from a single note, and build a world on top of this. I’m transitioning from one initial feeling of simplicity, to a more complex feeling. Then I may interrupt everything and transition from this place of complexity back to a place of simplicity. My works move in ebbs and flows. We have many moments of chaos and noise, and sometimes we can’t decipher one thing from the next. One party from the next. And then we are pushed to carve out moments of stillness. Form a tranquil state. My work is a creation of newness while allowing the familiar to lay with me.

Curated a show inspired by two friends from South Central LA who went to school together, made music and performed together, got signed together, lived together, traveled the world together—until one of them passed away too soon.

For The Nonce is a tribute to the life and memory of Yusef Afloat, the music and friendship of Yusef and Sach (aka Nouka Basetype), our lived experiences, and the memories of the people, places, and things that have shifted, changed, or transitioned over time.

Featuring films by @aishamoney, @alihajactaest, @bluhre, @bycatjones, @daheekiminla, @foxm4xy, @riachung00, @orange.mooon, @jalentadams, Jard Lerebours, @kikesaaa, @wipnala, @thebongolese, and @paigetaul; artwork by @deannabarahona, @0najevwe, and @ulenamorado; and photography by @bpleasel.

I hope this show can hold space for grief and healing, love and reflection, and the ways we carry those we’ve lost with us.

Opening reception is on Saturday, October 17th, 5 - 9:30 PM. The exhibit will be on view through December 5th.
