THE PROPER EXECUTION OF INSTRUCTIONS
91 × 61,5 cm / 40 × 60 cm, Mixed technique
The Proper Execution of Instructions examines the social and cultural codes of femininity through knitting patterns from the 1960s to the present. Grounded in personal memory, particularly moments shared with the artist’s grandmother, the work reveals the schematic structures of roles and norms imposed on women.
Critiquing the restriction and standardization of women’s labor and everyday practices, it likens precisely followed knitting patterns to mechanisms of power that limit individual agency. Rather than accepting these rules uncritically, the work reinterprets them, transforming rigid schematics into a surreal field of play. It positions women not as passive executors of instructions, but as subjects who reproduce and transform the system. Through aesthetic forms rooted in traditional femininity, invisible power relations and social norms are made visible and open to critique.

CLOTH FOR YOUR BUFFET, TEA FOR YOUR TABLE
30 × 45 cm / 30 × 45, Mixed technique
Following traces and imagining what is absent form the core of this layered drawing book. In dialogue with The Proper Execution of Instructions, it draws from my grandmother Perihan’s embroidery magazines. Selected pages are deconstructed and reconstructed.
Rooted in domestic contexts, the work references the tea table and the decorated buffet, gestures shaped by unspoken rules. Patterns spread across surfaces; distances between objects reveal hidden parameters organizing the composition. Within each element lie implicit boundaries and spatial structures that shape interaction, often unnoticed.

YFD | Berlin’25 is still on view at Zilberman | Berlin until 23 August 2025.

Belonging plays a vital role in how we understand ourselves and relate to the world; it lays the foundation for connections that are shaped by cultural contexts, shared experiences and diverse identities. As sociologist Stuart Hall states, “identity is always in process”; it is never fixed, but continuously formed and reformed through our interactions, surroundings, and personal journeys. Identity is not merely inherited; it is actively constructed, through the communities we align with and the places we choose to call home. For this reason, Zilberman embraces its role each year as a meeting ground — a space to connect with and support young artists at the outset of their creative journeys.

With works by Anıl Aydınoğlu, Yamo Aydemir, Chiau Syuan Chai, Hande Şevval Emirmahmutoğlu, Monika Karczmarczyk, Luis Kürschner, Shirin Mohammad, Leevke Succow & Mathilda Augart, Theresa Tuffner, Ferdinand Waas and Joanna Zvonar

We are happy to announce the coming exhibition „How to make a place a place“ 🏘️

Opening: 11 April 2025 from 19:00

Exhibition duration:
12.04. - 20.04.2025
Opening hours:
Tue, Fri, Sat, Sun from 14:00 to 19:00

The exhibition „How to make a place a place“ tells a polyphonic, contemporary story about our desire for localisation. Places are not fixed, they are created and change through memory, longing, exclusion and belonging. At a time when connections to places seem increasingly complex and at the same time fragile, the question arises: How do places shape us - and how do we shape them?
Eight artistic positions examine how places are conceived, negotiated and claimed and what traces they leave behind in us. With Omid Arabbay, Mina Barmani, Hande Emirmahmutoğlu, Lam Funke, Leonidas Kosmidis, Ida Nommerga, Yoav Perry, Aylin Scheer.

Curated by Omid Arabbay and Leonidas Kosmidis
